The Effect of Acute Exercise on Smoking Topography: No Evidence for Cutting Down One Puff at a Time

Abstract: R ecent systematic reviews have concluded that a single session of exercise ameliorates cravings and tobacco withdrawal symptoms; however, smoking behaviour (topography) has not been adequately addressed in the literature. This study examined the effect of an acute bout of exercise on smoking topography following a temporary period of smoking abstinence. Forty-eight adult smokers (N female = 34, M age = 43.14), who had been smoking for an average of 23.90 years, were randomised to an acute (10 minutes) bout of… Show more

“…Smokers’ cravings were assessed using two Likert scales: desire to smoke (DtS) and strength of desire (SoD). A total of 15 RCTs (749 participants in total, with 385 in the exercise group and 364 in the control group) were included for DtS ( Ussher et al, 2001 ; Taylor et al, 2006 ; Taylor and Katomeri, 2007 ; Van Rensburg and Taylor, 2008 ; Van Rensburg et al, 2009a ; Van Rensburg et al, 2009b ; Faulkner et al, 2010 ; Scerbo et al, 2010 ; Schneider et al, 2015 ; Tritter et al, 2015 ; De Jesus and Prapavessis, 2018 ; Jeffries et al, 2020 ; Masiero et al, 2020 ). Ten studies measuring SoD were included ( Ussher et al, 2001 ; Taylor et al, 2005 ; Ussher et al, 2006 ; Taylor and Katomeri, 2007 ; Everson et al, 2008 ; Ussher et al, 2009 ; Scerbo et al, 2010 ; Van Rensburg et al, 2012 ; Fong et al, 2014 ; Oh and Taylor, 2014 ), involving a total of 554 participants (273 in the exercise group and 281 in the control group).…”

“…Additional future research should examine the procedure's control of topography when smoking or vaping under different environmental manipulations, 9,10 such as those causing acute negative affect. 45 Toward that end, and to conduct such assessments under more naturalistic conditions, our PowerPoint-driven topography instructions could be modified and administered by smart phones for use during mobile assessment of inhaled product use while controlling topography 46,47 with or without including the CReSS Pocket device.…”

“…Relevant studies here are far more common for tobacco smoking, such as those examining variable responding to specific levels of smoking exposure as functions of individual differences, concurrent environmental conditions, differences in the cigarette's constituents, or other manipulations. Examples include research on responding due to static individual difference factors of high or low dependence, 6 menthol or nonmenthol preference, 7 or subject sex 8 ; contextual factors of testing location, 9 concurrently engaging in exercise, 10 or pretreatment with medications 11 ; and controlled variations in nicotine or other content of tobacco in test cigarettes. 12,13 Similarly observed variations in amount of self-administered exposure and in differential responses to exposure have been found in acute tests with electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes).…”
