In the late 1960's, a strong interest was raised in biomedical applications of ceramic materials (named bioceramics a little bit later). Bioceramics was initially used as reasonable alternatives to metals in order to increase their biocompatibility. However, within a short period, it has grown into a diverse class of biomaterials, presently including three essential types: relatively bioinert, bioactive (or surface reactive) and bioresorbable bioceramics. This review is limited to bioceramics prepared from calcium orthophosphates only, which belong to the categories of bioactive and bioresorbable compounds. There have been a number of important advances in this field during the past 30 -40 years. The research was shifted from an initial study on the develop-ment of bioinert bioceramics towards bioactive and bioresorbable bioceramics, and these different types of calcium orthophosphate bioceramics can be tuned through the structural and compositional control. At the turn of the millennium, a new concept of calcium orthophosphate bioceramics has been developed to promote a regeneration of bones. Current biomedical applications of calcium orthophosphate bioceramics include artificial replacements for hips, knees, teeth, tendons and ligaments, as well as repair for periodontal disease, maxillofacial reconstruction, augmenttation and stabilization of the jawbone, spinal fusion and bone fillers after tumor surgery. Potential future applications of calcium orthophosphate bioceramics are demonstrated in drug delivery systems, effective carriers of growth factors, bioactive peptides and/or various types of cells for tissue engineering purposes.

Of the many types of biomolecules used for molecular imprinting applications, proteins are some of the most useful, yet challenging, templates to work with. One method, termed the 'epitope approach', involves imprinting a short peptide fragment of the protein into the polymer to promote specific adsorption of the entire protein, similar to the way an antigen binds to an antibody via the epitope. Whole lysozyme or the 16 residue lysozyme C peptide was imprinted into porous silica scaffolds using sol-gel processing. After removing template, scaffolds were exposed to lysozyme and/or RNase A, which was used as a competitor molecule of comparable size. When comparing protein-to peptideimprinted scaffolds, similar amounts of lysozyme and RNase were bound from single protein solutions. However, while whole lysozyme-imprinted scaffolds showed about 4:1 preferential binding of lysozyme to RNase, peptide-imprinted scaffolds failed to show statistical significance, even though a slight preferential binding trend was present. These initial studies suggest there is potential for using peptide-imprinting to create specific protein-binding sites on porous inorganic surfaces, although further development of the materials is needed.

Our study provides a promising alternative of biomimetic coating which functionalizes the dental implant with adhesion peptides and may be useful for enhancing the bone remodeling around Ti implants. A chimeric peptide consisting of an Arg-Gly-Asp (RGD) sequence (mediating cell adhesion) and a RKLPDA (minTBP-1) sequence (specifically recognizing and binding to Ti substrate) was designed and synthesized. The chimeric peptide affinity to Ti disks, as well as its role in mediating MC3T3-E1 cell attachment and afterwards spreading on pre-coated Ti disks, was investigated. The chimeric peptide not only showed favorable affinity to Ti surfaces but also facilitated the adhesion of MC3T3-E1 cells.
