The effect of an individualized laboratory approach through microscale chemistry experimentation on students' understanding of chemistry concepts, motivation and attitudes

Abstract: The main goal of this study was to investigate whether the use of an individualized approach through microscale chemistry experiments in secondary schools can increase students' understanding of chemistry concepts, improve attitude towards chemistry practical work and motivation. Two comparable groups of Form Four students (16 years old) participated. The students in the experimental group (83) worked individually on ten microscale chemistry experiments, whereas the control group (87) worked in groups on tradi… Show more

“…Practical work allows the students to improve the conceptual understanding, master the practical laboratory skill, and gain learning motivation (Ural, 2016;Tesfamariam et al, 2017). Practical work in chemistry gives students opportunities to gain laboratory skills through scientific investigations and hands-on activities Thus, practical work enhances learning and development of conceptual understanding (Abdullah et al, 2009). However, practical work sometimes is excluded from chemistry because of the lack of resources.…”

“…Easy to made from simple materials 4.The instructions are easy to understand Aesthetic aspects: Based on the research result, it can be seen that the experimental kits of ideal gas laws developed in this study is sufficient to be used in the learning process. The use of experimental kits helps students to explore chemical concepts individually and improve their understanding (Abdullah et al 2008). However, it should be noted that these kits were intended for macroscopic observation of the enactment of ideal gas laws.…”

“…By having real-life phenomena, students are given the opportunities to evaluate and measure their views and to improve the understandings before the learning process (Ng & Nguyen, 2006). Practical work creates exceptional learning surrounding that help student to construct their knowledge, enhance logical, inquiry and psychomotor skills (Mashita, Norita, & Zurida, 2009). Besides, practical work offers an interactive experience to the students where they can broaden the scope of constructivist learning (Umar, Ubramaniam, & Ukherjee, 2005).…”
