The effect of antagonist tooth contact on the biomechanical response of custom‐fitted mouthguards

Abstract: Mouthguards are efficient at decreasing the stress and strain values on the tooth in front of an impact reaching more than 90% of shock absorption. A mouthguard with balanced occlusion and maximum number of contacts with mandibular anterior teeth should be considered because it reduces mouthguard displacement.

“…9 As children spend much of their time in schools, these actions can help reduce TDIs and expand the list of possible FHS actions. 28 The results corroborate those of other studies showing that being female is a protective factor for TDI in all outcome variables, considering that, in general, men participate more in physical activities and contact sports. 24 Children who practise contact sports, play with friends in the street and play ball games are more prone to collisions and falls that can lead to TDI.…”

“…Public school teachers should be trained and the use of mouthguards during sports activities should be encouraged as preventive measures against TDI . As children spend much of their time in schools, these actions can help reduce TDIs and expand the list of possible FHS actions …”

“…Contacts between teeth and Custom-made mouthguard in (F) 1 mm, (G) 2 mm, and (H) 4 mm the individualization of the patient would be performed, if one side would be thicker than the other, if all the teeth were touching the protector or if the antagonistic arch was in a stable occlusal position 9. These results corroborate with previous studies which defend the beneficial effect of the antagonistic dentition on stress dissipation 6,7. The most used test to evaluate the dampening capacity of MGs are experimental impact tests, in which a strain sensor is attached to the surface that will be analyzed and the region is punctually evaluated in several situations 1,18.…”

“…6,7 It has been already established that MG thickness is directly proportional to the property of protecting the facial tissues from damage. Antagonist teeth help in the stress distribution by reducing the maxilla displacement.…”
