The effect of Arabica coffee farmers’ innovation on good agriculture practice in Solok

Abstract

Coffee is the leading commodity of Indonesian plantations. One of the efforts to increase coffee production and quality requires farmers to implement innovations according to Good Agriculture Practices (GAP). This study aims to see the effect of the characteristics of innovation on the application of GAP by farmers. This research is a survey research with 100 Arabica coffee farmers as respondents. This research was conducted in the Districts of Lembah Gumanti and Pantai Cermin. The variables used are innovation characteristics: relative advantage, compatibility, complexity, trialability, and observability. Data were analyzed quantitatively using multiple regression. The results show that the characteristics of innovation (relative advantage, compatibility, complexity, trialability, and observability) in the application of Good Agriculture Practice Arabica coffee farmers in Solok Regency are in the moderate category where farmers carry out cultivation activities but are still not by the GAP concept. Multiple regression results show that simultaneously all variables affect the application of GAP. However, only the relative advantage, compatibility, and trialability variables affect the GAP implementation partially.
