The Effect of Bitter Melon (Momordica charantia L.) Leaves Extract on TNF-α Serum Levels and Diabetic Foot Ulcers Improvement : Randomized Controlled Trial

Abstract: Diabetic foot ulcer (DFU) is among the many complications of diabetes and it takes a very long period of time to heal. It can lead to the amputation of the lower limb, thereby resulting to death or in most cases, a bad quality of life. The aim and objective of this study is to assess the effect of bitter melon leaves extracts on serum TNF-α levels and improvement of diabetic foot ulcers. The study technique used here is the randomized, double-blinded, placebo-controlled trial. Thirty patients suffering from D… Show more

“…The majority of respondents in the treatment and control groups were women. This study is in accordance with the research by Rosyid et al [22], which states that the prevalence of diabetes mellitus is higher in women because women have a greater chance of increasing body mass index than men. This is caused by hormonal conditions such as pre-menstruation syndrome and postmenopausal conditions so that the distribution of body fat easily accumulates [23].…”

“…For the domain “outcome measurement”, nine studies were unclear with regard to AE. These were consistently tracked or only reported occasionally (Dans et al, 2007; John et al, 2003; Kim et al, 2020; Kumari et al, 2018; Lim et al, 2010; Rahman et al, 2015; Rosyid et al, 2018; Suthar_b et al, 2016; Zänker et al, 2012).…”

“…All seven studies administered anti-diabetic medication as co-intervention. In one of these studies participants used also antibiotics (Rosyid et al, 2018). The IRR was calculated for each study, ranging from 0.33 (95% CI = 0.01 to 16.54) to 13 (95% CI = 0.73 to 230.76) for AE.…”

“…Oxidative stress, known to be caused by excessive oxidants, is very important in wound healing because it causes further damage to tissues and therefore reduces or delays the healing process. It has been reported in the literature that the analgesic and antiinflammatory activities of bitter melon accelerate capillary circulation, thereby increasing oxygenation, which is an important factor in wound healing, and that the antiinflammatory and antioxidant activities reduce the harm caused by free radicals formed as a result of the inflammation and prevent the progression of necrosis (Kumar and Bhowmik, 2010;Agyare et al, 2014;Aljohi et al, 2016;Rosyid et al, 2018).…”
