The effect of borneol on the concentration of meropenem in rat brain and blood

Abstract: Meropenem is a carbapenem antibiotic with a wide spectrum of activity against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. Because of its clinical efficacy, meropenem is an excellent choice for the treatment of serious infections in both adults and children. The knowledge of tissue concentrations of antibiotic in an infection site is valuable for the prediction of treatment outcome. The aim of the present study is to investigate the effect of borneol on the concentration of meropenem in rat brain and blood a… Show more

“…Similar region-specific enhancement by borneol was also observed for puerarin and edaravone in the cortex (Gao et al, 2010), kaempferol in the hippocampus , meropenem in the striatum (Xin et al, 2014) and ligustrazine in the hypothalamus and the striatum (Yu et al, 2016). This may be directly associated with the brain region-specific distribution of borneol, suggesting that borneol's enhancement of CNS drug delivery varies in different brain regions.…”

“…Of which, 18 studies were lack of outcome assessments for BBB integrity, 67 studies did not test on co-administration of drug concentrations in CNS and/or the safety of borneol and/or the various indexes of BBB permeability, 2 studies compared with medicine or another agent with potential similar effect, 2 studies were lack of control group, 10 studies were in vitro studies, and 13 studies were duplicate publications. “…Recent studies showed that borneol could promote penetration of methotrexate, nimustine, and other drugs through the BBB, increasing drug concentration in the brain. 5 The purpose of this study is to further elucidate the role of borneol in the opening of the BBB and delineate the underlying molecular mechanism.…”
