The Effect of Calfhood Diseases on Growth of Female Dairy Calves During the First 3 Months of Life in New York State

Abstract: Our objective was to study the effects of pneumonia (cumulative incidence, 25%), diarrhea (29%), umbilical infection (14%), and umbilical hernia (15%) on BW and height gains during the first 3 mo of life. Female dairy calves (n = 410) born from January to December 1990 in 18 commercial herds in New York state were used. Average daily gains during the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd mo were 374, 596, and 719 g, respectively; average gain was 565 g during the 3-mo period. Average monthly height gains during the 1st, 2nd, and … Show more

“…Even on the best performing farm a third of their pre-weaned calves grew at <0.7 kg/day, and the bottom 5% grew at <0.16 kg/day. Such variability has consistently been reported in previous studies (Virtala et al, 1996;Brickell et al, 2009b;Bach et al, 2013). It suggests uneven rates of milk intake even though all animals on the same farm were, in theory, on the same feeding regime.…”

“…Mean initial and final BW were 42.7 (SE = 0.4) and 51.9 (SE = 0.7) kg, respectively. Rates of BW gain of calves during the initial 28 d of life are often limited to <500 g/d by feeding management, pathogen exposure, and environmental factors (29). Consequently, use of antibiotics and other feed additives to reduce the effects of pathogen exposure have been incorporated into CMR formulations (20,24).…”

“…Most calves (69.1%) had serum IgG <10 g/L and 10 calves had no measurable IgG by turbidimetric immunoassay. A lack of passive immunity has been associated with increased morbidity and mortality (9,31) and impaired efficiency of BW gain during the growing period (29,31). Calf morbidity and mortality was indicative of the serum IgG concentrations and number of calves with failure of passive transfer.…”
