The effect of cerium oxide on lung injury following lower extremity ischemia-reperfusion injury in rats under desflurane anesthesia

Abstract: Objectives: To examine the effects of desflurane and cerium oxide (CO) on lung tissue following ischemia-reperfusion injury (IRI). Methods: Experiments were conducted in Gazi University Animal Laboratory, Ankara, Turkey. Thirty rats were divided into 5 groups: control (C), IRI, IRI-CO, IRI-desflurane (IRID), IRI-CO-desflurane (IRICOD). Cerium oxide was given intraperitoneally. Lower extremity IRI was induced. Desflurane was applied during IRI. Lung histopathological exa… Show more

“…They stated that serum MDA and NO levels were lower in the groups treated with CO and CO together with des urane compared with the IR group, and histopathologic results were better in these two groups. 34 In conclusion, CO administered intraperitoneally at a dose of 0.5 mg/kg 30 minutes before ischemia alone and in the des urane administered group reduced oxidative stress and corrected the liver damage caused by IRI. We think that CO administration before IRI and des urane anesthesia during IRI can have a liver protective effect in rats.…”

“…We decided on the doses by taking previous studies as an example. 33,34 In our study, we evaluated oxidative stress and lipid peroxidation in liver tissue by measuring MDA levels, CAT, GST, and ARE enzyme activities.…”

“…Ozdemirkan et al investigated lung injury induced by CeO 2 and desflurane in rats with lower extremity IRI. They stated that serum MDA and nitric oxide levels were lower in the groups treated with CeO 2 , and CeO 2 together with desflurane, compared with the IR group, and histopathological results were better in these two groups [16].…”

“…Liver tissue samples were collected and kept in 10% formalin solution and serum samples at − 80 °C, and biochemical and histopathological tests were performed. The decision on the CeO 2 application dose and time was made based on the work done by Ozdemirkan et al [16].…”
