The initial predictions of the importance of geopolymers primarily assumed use mainly in the construction sector. However, as research progresses, it is becoming clear that these versatile materials demonstrate the ability to greatly exceed their original applications, as characterized in detail in this review article. To the best of our knowledge, there is no literature review concerning geopolymer materials that compiles the diverse applications of these versatile materials. This paper focuses on geopolymer applications beyond the construction industry. The surprising application potential of geopolymers in medicine has become a topic of particular interest. Therefore, considerable attention in this paper is devoted to characterizing the utility of these materials in tissue engineering, dentistry and drug delivery systems. Geopolymers not only have exceptional heat resistance and compressive strength, making them durable and resistant to manipulation (over five times less drug released from the geopolymer carrier compared to the commercial formulation), but also provide a robust solution for extended-release drug delivery systems, especially in opioid formulations. Their chemical stability, porous structure and ability to maintain structure after repeated regeneration processes speak to their potential in water treatment. Geopolymers, which excel in the energy industry as refractory materials due to their resistance to high temperatures and refractory properties, also present potential in thermal insulation and energy storage. It was demonstrated that geopolymer-based systems may even be 35% cheaper than conventional ones and show 70% lower thermal conductivity. In terms of protection against microorganisms, the possibility of modifying geopolymers with antimicrobial additives shows their adaptability, maintaining their effectiveness even under high-temperature conditions. Research into their use as anticorrosion materials is targeting corrosion-resistant coatings, with geopolymers containing graphene oxide showing particularly promising results. The multitude of potential applications for geopolymers in a variety of fields reflects their enormous potential. As research progresses, the scope of their possibilities continues to expand, offering innovative solutions to pressing global challenges.

Background: Polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) is one of the synthetic polymers generally used for temporary jacket crown restorations because of its good translucency, making its aesthetic value higher, but its mechanical properties, such as hardness and flexural strength are lower than composite resins. Hence, adding zirconia and cellulose filler is necessary to enhance its mechanical properties. Purpose: This is an experimental laboratory study to make nanocomposites with PMMA as a matrix with crystalline nanocellulose, zirconia, and alumina added as fillers. Methods: The crystalline nanocellulose filler was synthesized by acid hydrolysis. Zirconia and alumina were synthesized using the sol-gel technique and then characterized by transmission electron microscope and X-ray diffraction. The Micro Vickers hardness test and three-point bending tested mechanical properties. The analysis was carried out with a one-way analysis of variance, followed by a post hoc Tuckey’s test with a P < 0.05 taken as statistically significant. Results: The Micro Vickers hardness test showed the highest hardness in the group with a ratio of PMMA and zirconia-alumina filler of 50%: 2%: 48% (12.73 VHN). The results of the three-point bending test showed that the highest flexural strength was found in the control group (19.4 MPa). Conclusion: The addition of crystalline nanocellulose, zirconia, and alumina increase the hardness of the nanocomposite, while the flexural strength was lower than PMMA without filler addition.

The main objective of this study was to examine the effect of a chitosan addition on the thermo-mechanical properties and microstructure of a geopolymer-chitosan composite, as well as the growth activity of bacteria on the surface. Chitosan was produced by the demineralisation (DM) and deproteination (DP) of a shrimp shell powder using a dilute sodium hydroxide (NaOH) solution and hydrochloric acid (HCl), followed by deacetylation (DA) using a dilute NaOH solution. Geopolymer pastes were produced through the alkaline activation of metakaolin. The metakaolin was obtained by dehydroxylating kaolin at 750 °C for 4 h. The chemical composition and the functional groups of the chitosan were examined by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Fourier Transform Infra-Red Spectroscopy (FTIR), respectively. The results showed that a high-quality chitosan was produced. The hybrid composites were produced by adding chitosan powder into a geopolymer paste at 0.1, 1.5, and 2.0 wt. % of chitosan relative to the mass of the metakaolin. The mixture was then moulded, cured at 70 °C for 2 h and then stored in the open air for 28 days before being subjected to XRD and Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) analyses. Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC) and Flexural Strength measurements were conducted to investigate the thermo-mechanical properties of the composites. The results showed that the geopolymer paste was a very strong binder to the chitosan and produced composites with high thermal resistance and excellent flexural strength. The Total Count Plate (TCP) tests showed that the addition of 1.5 wt. % of chitosan powder produced the most effective composite to limit the growth of the bacteria.
