Human perception of the information on the road signs is a critical factor in determining the safe use of both the vehicle and the interacting environment. A total of 30 road traffic signs which includes10-warning, 10-regulatory and 10-informatory signs were evaluated using 190 questionnaires to determine comprehension level of road users in Kano. The questionnaire was administered to both private and commercial drivers of trucks, cars, tricycle, motorcycle, and bicycle. Majority of the respondents are male (91.6%) which is due to the disproportionate ratio between male and female drivers in Kano city and 90% of them are youth below the age of 40 years showing that majority of the state drivers are young people. The comprehension level was found to be good 79%. The least comprehended signs in Kano are "park and ride" with comprehension level of 54.7%, followed by "Narrow bridge" (60%), "line merge ahead" (62.1%), "slippery road" (63.2%), "No entry for all vehicles" (70.5%). The signs with up to 90% recognition were "fuel station", "stop sign" and "school crossing". Sex, education, driving experience and type of vehicle used seems to affect the comprehension level of drivers in Kano. Truck drivers have a poor understanding of the traffic signs lower than all other classes of road users (65%).

Is three the magic number ABSTRACTRoad sign comprehension plays an important part in road safety management, particularly for those drivers who are travelling in an unfamiliar country. Previous research has established that comprehension can be improved if signs are designed to adhere to ergonomic principles. However, it may be difficult for sign designers to incorporate all the principles into a single sign and may thus have to make a judgement as to the most effective ones. This study surveyed drivers in three countries to ascertain their understanding of a range of road signs, each of which conformed in varying degrees and combinations to the ergonomic principles. We found that using three of the principles was the most effective and that the most important one was that relating to standardisation; the colours and shapes used were key to comprehension. Other concepts which related to physical and spatial characteristics were less important, whilst conceptual compatibility did not aid comprehension at all.Practitioner Summary: This study explores how road sign comprehension can be improved using ergonomic principles, with particular reference to cross-border drivers. It was found that comprehension can be improved significantly if standardisation is adhered to and if at least three principles are used.

Paper ini bertujuan untuk menyajikan hasil kajian awal mengenai pengukuran tingkat efektivitas rambu peringatan jalan raya Jakarta berdasarkan survei kepada para pengendara. Dalam kajian awal ini, diambil responden sebanyak 100 orang pengendara yang berdomisili di daerah Jabodetabek. Sebanyak 37 rambu lalu lintas yang digolongkan sebagai rambu peringatan (warning signs) diukur efektivitasnya dengan indikator nilai comprehension level sesuai dengan standar ISO 3684. Satu set kuesioner berisi 37 pertanyaan mengenai efektivitas rambu lalu lintas disebarkan kepada 100 pengendara. Nilai comprehension level untuk masing-masing rambu lalu lintas peroleh dengan menghitung persentase jumlah jawaban yang benar untuk masing-masing rambu. Hasil kajian pendahuluan ini menunjukkan bahwa nilai comprehension level sebanyak 22 dari 37 rambu peringatan berada di bawah 67%, sebagaimana acuan standar yang diberikan oleh ISO 3684. Kajian awal ini menunjukkan bahwa sebagai besar rambu lalu lintas di DKI Jakarta belum efektif untuk menyampai pesan peringatan (warning) bagi pengendara bermotor.
