The effect of cooling rate on the surface reconstruction of annealed silicon(111) studied by scanning tunneling microscopy and low-energy electron diffraction

Abstract: We have incorporated a scanning tunneling microscope (STM) into an UHV analytical chamber containing low-energy electron diffraction (LEED), reflection high-energy electron diffraction, Auger, and scanning electron microscopy facilities. A second chamber has facilities for surface cleaning together with an entry lock for loading specimens. The STM incorporates a transfer system for both sample and tip, and fine control for the specimen to tip approach is achieved mechanically. X–Y scanning and data acquisition… Show more

“…Si (110)-(1 × 1) surface was the most stable at higher than 700 • C. It is thought that the structures in Figure 4 are stable even if they are quenched to a room temperature considering previous experimental reports [17].…”

“…They may consist of piezo drivers (stick-slip devices or clamped-step devices such as the inchworm), electrostatically clamped feet (louse walker) , or, more simply, screws based on lever, gear, or spring reduction mechanisms Pashley et al, 1988;Drake et al, 1986). Additional drivers are thus required to perform the coarse motion.…”

“…Pandey 123 proposed the generally accepted model for this surface, the "1r-bonded chain". Pashley et al 128 succeeded in forming regions of the 2xl reconstruction on a silicon region of a 2x2 reconstruction on a rapidly cooled silicon crystal. Based on the observation of a dimer reconstruction on rapidly cooled crystals, they suggest that the high temperature silicon may be an ordered lxl phase rather than a disordered 7x7 adatom structure.…”
