PurposePresent study investigated the influence of female descendent entrepreneur's self-compassion on the perceived succession success of small-family businesses (S-FB) with the mediating mechanism of financial literacy.Design/methodology/approachThe primary data was collected from 319 female descendent entrepreneurs who were designated as chairwomen, and managing director positions in their retails sector S-FBs. The purposive sampling technique was used to collect the data. The provided hypotheses are tested using the partial least square structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) technique. This study followed multiple regression analyses to see the influence of self-compassion (mindfulness, self-isolation, self-judgment and over-identification) on financial literacy and perceived succession success.FindingsThe results reveal that female descendent entrepreneurs mindfulness and over-identification significantly increase but self-isolation decreases the likelihood of successful succession transition. Moreover, female descendent entrepreneur's financial literacy increases mindfulness and overidentification while it decreases self-isolation and improves the likelihood of succession success. However, financial literacy does not influence self-judgmental traits and perceived succession success.Practical implicationsThis study highlights a vital issue, how the financial literacy of female descendent entrepreneurs manages their self-compassion and increases the likelihood of succession success. In addition, it covers a research gap and helps the S-FBs to improve their survival rate by focusing on the descendent entrepreneur's self-compassion and financial literacy.Originality/valueThis study contributes to the body of knowledge by emphasizing predictors that influence the successful succession transition to subsequent generations. This study determines the influence of self-compassion of female descendent entrepreneurs on perceived succession success and financial literacy as a mediator by using the self-control theory. The study can be useful to family business consultants, policymakers and family businesses.

La pandemia por Covid-19 generó consecuencias enormes en la economía mundial. Durante 2020, Chile fue un país enormemente afectado por el número de contagios con una evolución desfavorable de la pandemia a nivel nacional. Esto llevó a que la autoridad sanitaria decretada en reiteradas oportunidades el confinamiento de la población, lo que en consecuencia significó que muchas empresas tuvieran que paralizar sus funciones. Este trabajo tiene como objetivo analizar la existencia de heterogeneidad espacial en los determinantes de la variación de las ventas de microempresas a nivel municipal en Chile, con especial énfasis en los efectos del confinamiento y otras variables sociodemográficas. Para ello, se utilizó una aproximación a través del método de regresión ponderada geográficamente con kernel adaptativo. Los resultados muestran que, existen efectos negativos tanto de la cantidad de casos como del confinamiento a nivel municipal con zonas especialmente afectadas en el centro y norte del país. Los resultados son una contribución a la comprensión de cómo la pandemia afectó durante 2020 a las microempresas y a la generación de estrategias a nivel municipal.

Purpose The COVID-19 wave spread all over the global market, affecting all industries. This paper aims to develop the understanding of how service systems can enhance their viability when facing rapid systemic changes. Design/methodology/approach The authors use data from Reddit, and particularly the subreddit r/coronavirus, to identify posts that discuss the impact of coronavirus on business. The authors use an algorithm to scrape the data with business-related search terms and elaborate relevant posts. Findings The findings show key topics and related sentiments on the impact of COVID-19 on business. Service systems can enhance viability by identifying alternative paths for emerging opportunities (by being creative), seize opportunities offered by the changing environment (by being opportunistic), not compromise conditions for internal balance (by being resilient), focus attention on critical purposes (by being essential) and perform nonharmful actions (by being responsible). Originality/value This paper proposes a framework depicting five possible key enhancers of viability to face a systemic crisis. In brief, companies need to ensure that they are creative, opportunistic, resilient, essential and responsible.
