The Effect of Crystalline Rice Husk Silica on Polysulfone Membrane for Wastewater Treatment

Abstract: This study investigates the effect of additive rice husk silica and Polyethylene glycol(PEG) at different concentration on of Polysulfone (Psf) ultrafiltration (UF) membranes. The polymer membranes were prepared by a phase inversion method using Polysulfone (PSf) , N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP) as a solvent and distilled water as non-solvent. The performances of the membranes were measured in term of pure water flux by using distilled water and solute rejection at different wastewater concentration at 50%, 75% … Show more

“…However the major disadvantage of PSf is hydrophobic characteristic which is easy for pollutant to adsorb on membrane surface and cause serious fouling behaviour. Thus the current investigation to improve PSf surface have been progressively studied such as using low molecular weight hydrophilic polymer, inorganic additives and chemical modification such as grafting and crosslinking [6][7][8][9][10][11][12][13] . Blending inorganic additives such as titanium dioxide (TiO2), Silica (SiO2), zinc oxide (ZnO) and silver oxide in PSf membrane was found to improve hydrophilicity and reduce fouling properties of membrane.…”

“…Later on, The casting solution was cast using casting knife with range thickness 100-120µm and immersed into a coagulation bath containing distilled water. Then, the flat sheet membranes were dried 24 h before testing [1,2,3,11]. In this study, the coagulation medium were demineralized water or aqueous solution of sodium chloride (NaCl) at dissimilar concentrations is modified repeatedly in the range of 1-5 %.…”

“…[3][4][5] As proved previously, by varying of additive concentration or additive molecular weight (MW), optimal membrane structure can be obtained through enlargement or suppression of macrovoids in the membrane. [6][7][8] Polymer additive or non-solvent additive is a play vital role in the formation of membrane structure by enhancing or preventing the microvoid formation, enlarging pore formation, improving pore inter connectivity and introducing hydrophilicity. [9][10] According to Luo et.…”
