The Effect of Drugs on the Electrical and Mechanical Activity of the Isolated Porcine Stomach

Abstract: Electrical and mechanical activity was recorded from totally isolated porcine stomachs perfused with homologous blood. The electrical control activity, response activity, and mechanical reaction to various hormones and drugs stimulating these activities were recorded. The drugs were injected directly into the gastric artery of the isolated organ. Normal response to cholinergic stimulants and to pentagastrin was observed. The effect of blockers such as atropine, hexamethonium and tetrodotoxin on the action of s… Show more

“…Mechanical activity was monitored through a strain gauge which was stitched over the antrum. Figure 3 shows the positioning of electrodes and strain gauge on the stomach [1,2,14,18,19]. When stimulation of the vagus was per formed, a pair of platinum electrodes embedded in plastic were attached to the nerve of Latarjet on the lesser curvature.…”

“…Changes in blood gases and pH can suddenly occur and, if not corrected, they will induce rapid deterioration of the per fusion organ. This subject was discussed previously [12,13,19]. Methods of biochemical analysis and the tables with 'normal values' for the porcine perfusion blood were also reported [11][12][13][15][16][17],…”

“…Preser vation of the functional integrity of the Lataijet nerve was confirmed by the normal response to electrical stimulation of this nerve. The normal response to pentagastrin (11)(12)(13)16), suggested the functional integrity of the intramural plexus (16). Pentagastrin probably exerts its stimulating action on smooth muscle by releasing acetylcholine from the intramural gastric plexus (11,16).…”
