Purpose The purpose of this paper is to summarize and analyze what is known regarding activity-based costing (ABC) applications in the context of supply chain management (SCM). The authors present a reference framework for practical implications and areas for future research in intra-firm and inter-organizational environments. Design/methodology/approach The findings underlie a systematic review methodology. Research gaps and guidance for further publications are derived from the reference framework based on ABC and SCM literature. Findings The review illustrates four main areas for further research: determination of the role of management accounting in SCM (including supply chain finance), integration of time-driven ABC with radio frequency identification (RFID) technology and automatic data collection, analysis of inter-organizational management tools in supply chains in multiple negotiation rounds, and standardization of cost accounting data in supply chains. Practical implications The review provides practitioners with three main recommendations: ABC applications require a solid data basis, organizational readiness, commitment from senior management, and an ABC management philosophy; open book accounting for inter-organizational cost information-sharing purposes needs institutional arrangements and economic incentive systems; and sharing costs and benefits among supply chain members requires a change of managers’ mind-set. Originality/value This paper reveals practical implications and provides new directions for research based on the reference framework. The paper contributes to the interdisciplinary topic between SCM and management accounting by providing a structured overview of 87 peer-reviewed articles from 1992 to 2016.

Driving vehicles according to eco-driving principles and techniques have significant impact on decreasing both fuel consumption and carbon dioxide (CO 2) emissions. In addition to some kind of technical and/or mechanical features brought by today's new generation vehicles, driver behavior is also one of the greatest factors affecting the fuel consumption. Many studies show that the effect of eco-driving education on the drivers loses its impact in long term and there needs some sort of continuous monitoring and/or feedback mechanisms. This kind of driver monitoring becomes very critical especially in fleets composed of heavyduty vehicles, such as municipality buses, truck fleets, etc. Moreover, in order to adapt behavior to drive more economically, information about instant fuel consumption has to be provided to the driver. Hence, in this paper, we introduce an eco-driving system in which data gathered from the controller area network (CANBus) of public transport vehicles are processed for both comparative and fair evaluation of bus drivers' eco-driving performance. Moreover, in-vehicle components of the system guide the drivers during their trips; provide feedbacks and real-time warnings considering the fuel consumption. Developed system was successfully deployed and evaluated in one of the public metrobus systems used by approximately 250000 passengers every day. Based on the 15-months evaluation period, the results are very promising in the sense that both drivers and operators found the system useful and the system provided fuel saving up to approximately 5% even in the short term of monthly comparisons. Electrification is a potential solution for transport decarbonization and already widely available for individual and public transport. However, the availability of electrified commercial vehicles like waste collection vehicles is still limited, despite their significant contribution to urban emissions. Moreover, there is a lack of clarity whether electric waste collection vehicles can persist in real world conditions and which system design is required. Therefore, we introduce a multi-agent-based simulation methodology to investigate the technical feasibility and evaluate environmental and economic sustainability of an electrified urban waste collection. We present a synthetic model for waste collection demand on a per-link basis, using open available data. The tour planning is solved by an open-source algorithm as a capacitated vehicle routing problem (CVRP). This generates plausible tours which handle the demand. The generated tours are simulated with an open-source transport simulation (MATSim) for both the diesel and the electric waste collection vehicles. To compare the life cycle costs, we analyze the data using total cost of ownership (TCO). Environmental impacts are evaluated based on a Well-to-Wheel approach. We present a comparison of the two propulsion types for the exemplary use case of Berlin. And we are able to generate a suitable planning to handle Berlin’s waste collection demand using battery electric vehicles only. The TCO calculation reveals that the electrification raises the total operator cost by 16–30%, depending on the scenario and the battery size with conservative assumptions. Furthermore, the greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) can be reduced by 60–99%, depending on the carbon footprint of electric power generation.
