“…2c, d ). This interesting increase in blood circulation in the untreated tissue after removal of the acupuncture needle has already been reported [7,19] . Ernst and Lee [7] showed that the skin temperature corresponding to the blood fl ow in the non-treated face and foot as well as the treated hand increased for a long time after the needle removal.…”

“…These effects in the central nervous system are most likely induced during training sessions by the exercise-inherent somatosensory nerve traffic: evidence for this hypothesis can be found in several studies about the effects of periodic electrical somatosensory stimulation (hence, without any actual exercise), often of the peroneal or sciatic nerve, often in a 2-persecond rhythm (actually: marching pace). Indeed, the observed effects parallel strikingly those of exercise: activation of the hypothalamic-endorphinergic system that exerts a direct inhibiting action on sympathetic outflow [12,13]; generalised peripheral vasodilation [14]; reduction of plasma renin activity [15], reduction of plasma endothelin-1 levels [16,17], increased bioavailability of nitric oxide [18], blood pressure reduction [19] and increased BRS [20,21].…”

“…Numerous studies have reported successful results with acupuncture treatment in these inflammatory diseases. Nevertheless, the number of studies investigating the effects of acupuncture in the treatment of SS patients is limited [10][11][12][13][14][15][16]. Three studies that were published 20 years ago in languages other than English do not provide sufficient data in their abstracts [10,12,13].…”

“…Three studies that were published 20 years ago in languages other than English do not provide sufficient data in their abstracts [10,12,13]. In three recent studies, only a few acupuncture points and gastric effects were evaluated [14][15][16]. Moreover, in these studies, rather than classical acupuncture application, TENS or acupressure was applied on acupoints.…”
