The Effect of Enteral Tube Feeding on Patients’ Health-Related Quality of Life: A Systematic Review

Abstract: Patients with functional gastrointestinal tract who are unable to meet their nutritional requirements may benefit from the use of enteral nutrition via feeding tubes which could be nasogastric, percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy and jejunostomy. Although enteral tube feeding has been shown to promote nutritional status, improve wound healing, and enhance patients’ quality of life (QoL), evidence of tube and feed complications and reduced QoL has also been reported. Despite the increasing prevalence of patient… Show more

“…Enteral tube feeding is an effective method of providing nutritional support to individuals with a functional gastrointestinal tract who may be unable to meet their nutritional requirements through the oral route [ 2 , 4 , 5 ]. Individuals may be unable to meet their nutrition needs due to various diseases such as stroke, motor neurone disease, multiple sclerosis, dementia, head and neck cancer, and other conditions which could impair their swallowing ability [ 4 ]. Therefore, enteral tube feeding can be used for the management of malnutrition or can be a prophylactic measure to reduce the risk of malnutrition.…”

“…Prophylactic endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG) tube may also negatively affect the psychological status of the patients as it may interfere with family life, intimate relationships and social activities (37). However, a recent systematic review of the effect on enteral tube feeding on health related quality of life suggests PG placement to be effective in improving quality of life for patients with HNC cancers treated with CCRT (38).…”
