The Effect of Er:YAG Laser on Entroccocus faecalis Bacterium in the Pulpectomy of Anterior Primary Teeth

Abstract: Introduction: Successful root canal therapy depends on the complete elimination of microorganisms such as Entroccocus faecalis, which is impossible to achieve with the traditional methods. Lasers are recently introduced as a new method to solve the problem. The present study is planned and performed to examining the antibacterial effect of Er: YAG laser. Methods: Sixty extracted anterior primary teeth were prepared and sterilized. E. faecalis bacterium was cultured in canals. Samples were randomly divided into… Show more

“…e results of Kuvvetli's et al study [21] on permanent teeth showed a stronger bactericidal effect of erbium laser compared to NaOCl. Due to the novelty of this method and the lack of sufficient information on the use of 445 diode lasers and its success rate in the endodontic treatment, it seems that further studies are essential in this field and on the simultaneous effects of this laser and erbium laser and on the effectiveness of these lasers in different dentinal thicknesses.…”

“…All teeth were cut at the cementoenamel junction with a high-speed diamond disc (Crown cutter, DFS Diamond Co., Germany), and the root canals were instrumented with #15 and #20 K-files (Mani Co., Japan) followed by #25 and #30 rotary files with 4% taper (Kids File; Denco Co., China) that were used 1 mm shorter than the radiographic apex [23]. Insertion of laser fiber into the canals to 1 mm shorter than the apex was ensured.…”

“…For smear layer removal and maintaining the dentinal tubules open (for bacterial penetration), 2 mL of 17% EDTA (Asia-Shimi-Teb Co., Iran) was used in the root canals for 1 min, followed by 2 mL of 2.5% NaOCl (Nik Darman Co., Iran) for 1 min, and a final rinse with saline [24]. The apical foramen of the teeth was sealed with temporary cement (Spident Co., South Korea) to prevent apical leakage, and the external root surface was sealed with nail varnish [23].…”

“…12,13 Over the last decade, various alternative irrigative methods consisting of lasers/laser-activated irrigation and ultrasonic/ sonic irrigation systems have been developed and popularized to increase the effectiveness of root canal disinfection and E. faecalis elimination. [14][15][16] Besides laser technology, the usage of plant-derived/natural/ herbal extracts has increased as new efficient therapies against growing antibacterial resistance and oral bacteria. Various natural extracts or their complexes have been investigated, and it has been shown that herbs can manage oral infections to improve oral health.…”
