The effect of evening primrose oil on labor induction and cervical ripening: A systematic review and meta‐analysis

Abstract: The evening primrose oil has prostaglandin effects and is applied to soften the cervix. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to establish the results of clinical trials performed on the effect of evening primrose oil on labor induction and cervical ripening in pregnant women. Research studies were searched from 1990 to September 2019 in Pubmed, Science Direct, Embase, and Cochrane Library using the keywords: cervical ripening, Bishop score, labor induction, post-term pregnancy, evening primrose, and a… Show more

“…The results of a meta-analysis by Moradi et al . [ 19 ] showed no significant difference in Bishop Scores before and after in the intervention and control groups. “…Usually in first pregnancy, the effect of primrose oil capsules taken orally and their effect on cervix in terms of bishop score are determined in 38 to 42 weeks of gestation. 23 Researchers described effective results of oil through vaginal insertion. 24 Further studies are required to see the effect of vaginal insertion.…”

“…However, a later systematic review and meta-analysis of 4 trials favored vaginal dosing by demonstrating no difference in Bishop scores with oral consumption of evening primrose oil on cervical ripening. 10 Given the heterogeneity of studies in both these meta-analyses, further research is recommended to further explore the efficacy of evening primrose oil on cervical ripening. However, given the current data, which demonstrate no adverse effects, we can conclude that vaginal administration would be favored over oral administration.…”

“…This meta-analysis describes daily dosing of 1000-mg primrose oil capsules orally or vaginally, ranging from once near time of delivery to daily from the 38th week of pregnancy until time of delivery. However, a later systematic review and meta-analysis of 4 trials favored vaginal dosing by demonstrating no difference in Bishop scores with oral consumption of evening primrose oil on cervical ripening 10 . Given the heterogeneity of studies in both these meta-analyses, further research is recommended to further explore the efficacy of evening primrose oil on cervical ripening.…”
