Problems related to excessive use of the Internet and video games have recently captured the interests of both researchers and clinicians. The goals of this review are to summarize the literature on treatment effectiveness for these problems and to determine whether any treatments meet the minimum requirement of an evidence-based treatment as defined by (Chambless et al. 1998). Studies of treatments for Internet gaming disorder (IGD) and Internet addiction were examined separately, as past studies have linked IGD to more severe outcomes. The systematic review identified 26 studies meeting predefined criteria; 13 focused on treatments for IGD and 13 on Internet addiction. The results highlighted a paucity of well-designed treatment outcome studies and limited evidence for the effectiveness of any treatment modality. Studies were limited by methodological flaws, including small sample sizes, lack of control groups, and little information on treatment adherence, among other problems. In addition, the field is beset by a lack of consistent definitions of and established instruments to measure IGD and Internet addiction. The results of this review highlight the need for additional work in the area of treatment development and evaluation for IGD and Internet addiction. Attention to methodological concerns identified within this review should improve subsequent research related to treating these conditions, and ultimately outcomes of patients suffering from them.

ResumenIntroducción: A mediados del siglo XX, con la emergencia de la computadora personal, el uso de videojuegos comenzó a considerarse como una potencial herramienta para el entrenamiento cognitivo, incrementando la funcionalidad de un amplio espectro de dominios perceptivos, ejecutivos y atencionales. Recientemente, los videojuegos han generado controversia en la comunidad científica mundial. Diversos estudios reportaron que el uso excesivo de videojuegos puede causar adicción. Objetivo: La presente revisión narrativa se propone relevar literatura científica sobre los aspectos psicológicos implicados en la adicción a videojuegos. Resultados: El uso patológico de los videojuegos tiene características similares, pero también distintiva de otras adicciones. Las principales alteraciones neuropsicológicas observadas en individuos con adicción a videojuegos se reflejan en control inhibitorio y la toma de decisión. Los criterios diagnósticos específicos no están completamente definidos para los videojuegos, sobre todo por ser aún objeto de controversia entre los investigadores. Discusión: Una clara definición de estos criterios diagnósticos es fundamental para el avance de la investigación en el área. En este sentido, los estudios de neuroimágenes carecen de rigurosidad metodológica al emplear muestras pequeñas. Finalmente, las investigaciones en neuropsicología podrían ayudar a clarificar los déficits cognitivos presentes en estos individuos. ResumoIntrodução: a meados do século XX com o surgimento do computador pessoal, o uso de videogames começou a considerarse como uma potencial ferramenta para entreteniento cognitivo, aumentando a funcionalidade de uma vasta game de domínios perceptual, executivo e atencional. Recentemente, os videogames geraram controvérsias na comunidade científica mundial. Diversos estudos relataram que o uso excessivo de videogames pode causar dependência. Objetivo: a presente revisão narrativa propõe revisar a literatura científica sobre os aspectos psicológicos envolvidos na dependência de videogames. Resultados: o uso patológico dos videogames tem características similares, mas também distintiva de outras dependências. As principais alterações neuropsicológicas observadas em indivíduos com adição em videogames se refletem no controle inibitório e na tomada de decisão. Os critérios diagnósticos específicos não estão completamente definidos para os videogames, especialmente, por ser um assunto de controvérsias entre os pesquisadores.
