Kudzu fiber-reinforced polypropylene composites were prepared, and their mechanical and thermal properties were determined. To enhance the adhesion between the kudzu fiber and the polypropylene matrix, maleic anhydride-grafted polypropylene (MAPP) was used as a compatibilizer. A continuous improvement in both tensile modulus and tensile strength was observed up to a MAPP concentration of 35 wt %. Increases of 24 and 54% were obtained for tensile modulus and tensile strength, respectively. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) showed improved dispersion and adhesion with MAPP. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy showed an increase in hydrogen bonding with an increase in MAPP content. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) analysis indicated little change in the melting temperature of the composites with changes in MAPP content.

Flax fibers used for various applications are obtained from flax stems. Retting followed by drying and mechanical separation leads to the production of fibers. This review article discusses the application of electro-technologies in the production of bast fibers from the flax stem. In these technologies, flax stems harvested from the field are subjected to microwave assisted retting, followed by electro–osmotic dewatering which reduces the water content of the stems. Dewatered stems are transferred to a microwave chamber for further drying, thus retted stems are obtained for further processing

In solid‐state fermentation, microorganisms grow on moist solid substrates in the absence of free water. The absence of free water makes the system quite different from submerged liquid fermentations and makes solid‐state fermentation superior for the production of some products. Understanding and modeling microbial growth kinetics and transport phenomena are essential to the development of large‐scale solid‐state fermentation technology. However, compared with submerged liquid fermentation, relatively little is known about the best ways to design and operate solid‐state fermentation bioreactors for large‐scale processes. This article summarizes the current state of development of modeling of solid‐state fermentation processes.
