The Effect of Fixed-Cutter Bit Design Features on the Steerability and Field Performance of a Point-the-Bit Rotary-Steerable System

Abstract: This paper describes how extensive testing has allowed the determination of a link between cutting structure geometry, gauge pad configuration, and achievable hole curvature or steerability. For a specific point-the-bit system, the tests have shown that steerability of the bit is not substantially dependent upon the cutting structure geometry; rather, the nature and extent of gauge pad features are crucial to the directional response of the system. Gauge pad bearing efficiency must be high while simultaneously… Show more

“…The number is resultant from intensive communication, research, and testing with the directional tool providers; mathematical modeling; development of innovative features and technologies for specific tools; analysis of the thousands of runs accumulated; and use of field verification tools and techniques. The results from this documented testing and prior test projects 10 have been incorporated directly into the matching software.…”

“…The typical representative of the point-the-bit system is Geo-Pilot which is connected with the drill collar and relied on the flexible shaft bending to produce a force at the end of the shaft for orientation [1][2][3] . Comparing with the push-the-bit system, point-the-bit drilling tool is superior to the others because of its simple structure, reliability and easy control.…”

“…To overcome theshortcoming of point-the-bit 4,5 and push-the-bit improve the quality of bore hole, a novel structure of rotary steerable drilling tool which used a universal joint 6 as a connection to the rotating mandrel and offset mandrel is presented in this paper. Our new designed drilling tool uses a universal joint to avoid producing alternating stress produced by the increasing ultimate displacement 7 . It can greatly improve force situation so that the drilling tool has a longer lifetime and higher security.…”
