Strawberry shows genetic variability between cultivars and, environmental elements affect the physicochemical traits of fruits when assessed under different environments. So, assessment of the stability of physicochemical traits is a tool that assists the producer in the choice of the cultivar with higher acceptance in the consumer market. This study aimed to assess the stability of strawberry cultivars based on physicochemical traits of fruits on three environments using the additive main effects with multiplicative interaction (AMMI) analysis. Thirteen strawberry cultivars were assessed in Lavras-MG, Uberlândia-MG, and Guarapuava-PR. The experimental design was in blocks with treatments at random and four replications. The stability of physicochemical traits of fruits (firmness, soluble solids, titratable acidity, soluble solids to titratable acidity ratio, vitamin C, and anthocyanins) was assessed. For the stability and performance of physicochemical traits under the three environments, the cultivars Tudla and Festival stood out for fruit firmness, Albion for soluble solids, Aromas and Tudla for titratable acidity, Sweet Charlie and Palomar for soluble solids to titratable acidity ratio, and Camarosa for vitamin C and anthocyanins.

Maintaining plants in the field for two consecutive crop cycles is one of the latest techniques used by strawberry growers to reduce production costs. The goal of this research was to evaluate the postharvest fruit quality of six strawberry cultivars produced for two consecutive seasons with the same plants. They were planted from May to July 2010 under low-tunnel and fruits were evaluated in two growing seasons (season 1= January, February, and March 2011 and season 2= August, September, and October 2011), totaling three harvests of each cultivar in each year season. Fruits were picked up randomly among 500 plants of each cultivar, organized into five replications of five fruits and kept for three days before analysis under refrigeration (average temperature of 4°C). Variables analyzed were: soluble solids content, titratable acidity, soluble solids content/titratable acidity, flesh firmness, C vitamin content, sensory characteristics (sweetness, flavor, acidity, aroma, shape and flesh firmness), and mineral composition (Ca, Fe, K, Mg, Mn, Cu and Zn). 'Albion', 'Monterey' and 'San Andreas' showed good physical, chemical and sensory characteristics in both seasons. In general, fruits produced during the season 1 showed better physical, chemical and sensory characteristics than fruits produced in season 2. 'Palomar' and 'Portola' were better than the other cultivars concerning C vitamin content in both seasons. 'Palomar' showed higher potassium, calcium, magnesium, manganese and zinc levels, and 'Portola' showed higher calcium and iron levels.

The multi-trait genotype-ideotype distance index (MGIDI) was used to select superior treatments in experiments with strawberries. Twenty-three productive, qualitative, physiological, and phenological traits with negative and positive desired gains were accessed in 16 treatments, a combination of two cultivars (Albion-neutral days, and Camarosa-short days), two transplants origins (National and Imported), and four organic substrates mixes (Crushed sugarcane bagasse, burnt rice husk, organic substrate, and Carolina commercial substrate). Our results suggest that most of the strawberry traits are influenced by the cultivar, transplant origin, cultivation substrates, as well as by the interaction between cultivar and transplant origin. The MGIDI index indicated that the Albion cultivar originated from imported transplants grown in substrates where the main component (70%) is burnt rice husk provides desired values for 20 of a total of 22 traits, which represents a success rate of ~ 91% in selecting traits with desired values. The strengths and weakness view provided by the MGIDI index revealed that the looking for an ideal treatment should direct the efforts on improving the water efficiency use and reducing total acidy of fruits. On the other hand, the strengths of selected treatments are mainly related to productive precocity, total soluble solids, and flesh firmness. The MGIDI index provides a unique, robust, and easy-to-handle process, standing out as a powerful tool to develop better treatment recommendations for experiments with strawberries when multiple traits are assessed.
