The effect of gamma irradiation on the structural properties of olivine

Abstract: Gamma irradiation studies of (Mg0.905Fe0.095)2SiO4 olivine were performed using X-ray fluorescence method, X-ray diffraction, Raman and Mössbauer spectroscopy. The absorbed doses were 300, 600 and 1000 Gy. Small irradiation doses cause an increase of lattice vibrations and small deformation of both M1 and M2 octahedron. The observed effect is similar to the results expose to high temperature. However, the small deformation takes place only in unit cell of Olivine’s structure.

“…It's well known that lattice parameters linearly decrease with increasing forsterite [3]. However, we compared the lattice parameters of B-rich forsterite (Fo = 99.7) with pure forsterite (Fo = 100) (Figure 4) [1,13]. The lattice parameters of the former are smaller than those of the latter.…”

“…Si is on tetrahedral interstices and Mg and Fe ions are on octahedral sites (labeled M1 and M2). The M1 site is a distorted octahedra at the center of symmetry whereas M2 is a regular octahedra on the mirror plane [1][2][3][4]. Olivine is a general name of forsterite-fayalite sold solution [5].…”

“…First, due to a mutual torsion of tetrahedra under the effect of gamma irradiation, the above could cause deformations within the unit cell due to a change in the distance between oxygen, iron, magnesium, or any metal ions [30]. e second reason is because the intensity lines can change in the diffractograms and can be explained by the supply of additional energy to the crystal influenced by gamma radiation, which can increase the vibrations of the crystal lattice [30]. Any of the above reasons can change the number of diffraction particles in the plane and thus change the intensity line in the diffractograms.…”

“…Therefore, the hyperfine magnetic fields obtained for these Feoxides and hydroxides are lower than those reported in the literature(Stevens et al 2005;Hassan 2015). The two doublets with isomer shift (IS) values of 1.06-1.21 mm/s and quadrupole splitting (QS) of 2.55-2.85 mm/s and 2.88-2.95 mm/s originate with Fe 2+ ions in the octahedral positions of the olivine structure(Kądziołka-Gaweł et al 2018). The doublet with the smaller quadrupole splitting, i.e.…”
