The Effect of Gamma Irradiation on Space Charge Behaviour and Dielectric Spectroscopy of Low-density Polyethylene

Abstract: Abstract:The influence of gamma irradiation on low-density polyethylene (LDPE) has been studied through space charge measurement and dielectric spectroscopy. Commercial LDPE film with a thickness of 100µm was irradiated with γ-rays at a dose rate of approximately 10kGy/h to different doses up to 100kGy in an atmosphere of air, vacuum and nitrogen respectively. Space charge profiles vary depending on irradiation environments and radiation dose. The space charge profile of a sample after irradiation at 100kGy in… Show more

“…There are three main ways for surface charges to dissipate: (1) migrating to the ground electrode on the back, (2) migrating along the surface by the tangential electric field and entering the earth through the ground electrode, and (3) neutralizing with heterogeneous charges in the air. Which dissipating path dominates depends on various factors such as the surface characteristics of the solid medium, the gas atmosphere, and the electrode structure [17,18]. Since the normal electric field on the film surface is much larger than the tangential electric field in this experiment.…”

“…High frequencies ε'' modifications are usually attributed to oxidation phenomena while low frequencies ones are often related to additives consumption and structural modification (such as chain scission and crosslinking) [10]. The latter causes interfacial modification between crystalline and amorphous regions of polymers, which is associated to Maxwell-Wagner-Sillars polarization [11].…”
