“…Irradiation has caused a depression of a-amylase synthesis in Triticum monococcum ssp. monococcum L. and Triticum aestivum L. (Machaiah & Vakil, 1979;Matsumura, 1960) as well as a reduction in the rate of gibberellin (GA) biosynthesis and overall (Machaiah, Vakil, & Sreenivasan, 1976). Gamma irradiation dosages that result in changes in germination and growth have specific decreasing effects on certain respiratory enzymes such as catalase, peroxidase, isocitric dehydrogenase, a-amylase, ribonuclease and 3 0 -nucleotidase.…”

“…Levitt (1980) attributed the decrease in soluble sugar levels to inhibition of photosynthesis. c-irradiation inhibited CO 2 assimilation (Stoeva 2002) and decrease the hydrolytic enzymes a-amylase and invertase, the enzymes involved in carbohydrate metabolism (Machaiah et al 1976). The decrease in soluble sugar levels, along with a-amylase and invertase activities may imply depletion of GA 3 by c-irradiation, which represses the activity of certain hydrolases (Gaber et al 2000).…”

“…A similar correlation was reported by Mansour (1994). Machaiah et al (1976) reported that c-irradiation blocks the production of phytohormones that are essential for nucleic acid synthesis.…”
