Radon, generated in the earth's crust, enters the pore spaces and is transported by diffusion,then, it is released into the surrounding atmosphere.Grain size is one of the important factors that affect the radon exhalation rate from the soil.Radon emanates through the soil grains into air and diffuses to the atmosphere.The variation of radon concentration and exhalation rate from calcium silicate rock samples, with different grain sizeswas measured using Alpha Track Detector. The high value of radon exhalation rate was 43.05 ± 2.17 at gravel sizeand the lowest value was 8.98 ± 0.85at mud size.The results indicate that the exhalation rate was increased with increasing grain size of the studied samples. Theobtained values of radon exhalation rate for all samples were found to be under the radon exhalation rate limit reported worldwide, and UNSCEAR. The present study is important for radiological impact assessment studies that requires information on the exposure due to natural radiation to protect the environment.

Technical benefits relevant to the use of palm oil clinker (POC) and fuel ash (POFA) in building materials has been well documented. However, the radiological health hazards caused by the incorporation of POC and POFA as an ingredient of building materials have not been studied so far. The radioactivity levels were measured by γ-ray spectrometry using hyper-pure germanium (HPGe) detector. The activity concentration of 226Ra and 232Th in POC and POFA was found to be in the ranges of 5.56 ± 0.23 to 9.03 ± 0.21 and 4.21 ± 0.03 to 7.98 ± 0.19 Bq kg−1, respectively, and these values were lower than the world average values of 50 Bq kg−1 for building materials. The 40K value was within the range of 413.01 ± 1.78 to 604.66 ± 2.18 Bq kg−1. Several radiological parameters and hazard indices, i.e. radium equivalent activity, absorbed dose rate and annual effective dose etc. were calculated for the evaluation of the potential radiological hazards. The obtained values fall within the recommended limit set by various international organizations. Since the activity levels of 226Ra, 232Th and 40K in POC and POFA were significantly lower than the corresponding literature data for other ingredients of building materials, it indicates that POC and POFA are safe to be used in concrete construction.

a b s t r a c tCoal Fly Ash and Coal Bottom Ash are a solid waste generated from coal combustion. Recently, the management of these wastes has become an important subject for environmental researchers. Due to their physical and chemical characteristics, coal ashes were used in different fields like building material, agriculture and wastewater treatment. In the present investigation, a radiological assessment of Waste Water Treatment Plant (WWTP) based on the use of coal ashes as filters was performed. The WWTP under investigation uses four stages of treatment: Coal Fly Ash filtration, Coal Bottom Ash filtration and sand filtration. Radiation risk of coal ashes was evaluated by 2 techniques: Dosimetry alpha based on the use of LR115 detector and gamma ray spectrometer. The surface exhalation rate in coal ash samples were found to be below the world average 57600 mBq•m À2 h À1 and most of the coal ash samples show the value of Raeq less than the allowed upper limit of 370 Bq kg À1 . Moreover, the radon concentration of water samples during the treatment were evaluated for each stage in order to identify if there was any impact of coal ashes on the treated water. Radon activity of treated water remains in the standards with a average value of 196 ± 13 (Bq/m 3 ) less far than the permissible limit (11100 Bq/m 3 ). The obtained results indicate that the radiological characteristics of the treated water was not influenced by radiological characteristics of coal ashes. It be concluded that coal ashes from TAQA Morocco are a safe materials and did not present a significant radiological risk which make them a suitable material for wastewater treatment.
