The effect of grit on leisure time physical activity. An Application of Theory of Planned Behaviour

Abstract: Background: Grit as a personal trait has an important role in achieving different behavioural outcomes. The present study aimed to test the validity of an extended model of the Theory of Planned Behaviour, in which domains of grit, such as perseverance of effort and consistence of interest are mediators between the attitude and intention, and between attitude and self-reported leisure time physical activity behaviour.

“…To some extent we can see this as parallel to the findings of nonsignificant relationships between grit-interest, autonomous motivation, and LTPA. A nonsignificant relationship between grit-interest and LTPA is consistent with findings from previous studies (Hein et al., 2019, 2020). This repeated finding allows us to confirm the assumption that grit-interest does not play a significant role in predicting LTPA.…”

“…Recently, other investigators noted the need to take into account the context-specific area associated with measuring grit dimensions (Karlen et al., 2019). An explanation for the absence of any direct effect from grit-interest to LTPA may be that in order to be physically active, it is sufficient to engage usually in only one specific sport that does not then require consistency of interests to try new things (Hein et al., 2020). Consistent with findings by Disabato et al.…”

“…with responses reported on a six-point scale (one = not at all and six = most days per week). The measure of leisure time self-reported physical activity has been shown to be valid and reliable (Hagger et al, 2003(Hagger et al, , 2005(Hagger et al, , 2009Polet et al, 2020), and has previously been used in an Estonian context (Hein et al, 2020;Tilga et al, 2020).…”

“…This includes activities such as going out for meal or going to the cinema, for example. Participation in leisure activities could be a complex procedure for some people because it includes the processes of nding the right activity, planning and implementing appropriate and interesting leisure activities (14).…”
