Efforts to reduce human-wildlife-conflict are integral to wildlife management and conservation in urban habitats. In our study, we identified the HWC situations in urban areas of Krakow city, based on animal-vehicle collisions, intrusion to property, and damages. Hot spot analysis and Moran’s Index were used to identify the location of maximum potential conflict. We analysed 2512 incidents in which animals (of which 85% included mammals and 15% birds) were involved in conflict situations between 2007 and 2013. A significant seasonal variation was observed among the animals. We also identified roe deer (50.23%), red fox (22.80%) and wild boar (11.40%), as the three prominent conflicted animals. Getis–Ord Gi* analysis was used to identify spatial clusters of conflict. A significant spatial association was found in the location of clusters of hot spots in specific land-use based on Moran’s Index. Hot spots of roe deer and wild boar were high in grasslands and in forest and for red fox in built-up area. The results underscore the notion that conservation and wildlife management efforts must take into account differences in the seasonality of HWC among species. This information can be used to inform mitigation strategies.

Microbial community structure and niche differentiation under different health statuses of Pinus bungeana in the Xiong'an New Area in China

Pinus bungeana is a native but endangered plant species in China, with high ornamental value and adaptability to drought and cold. The relationship between the soil community structure and endophytic microbes in the tissues of P. bungeana under different health statuses is poorly understood. In this study, the endophytic bacterial and fungal communities of P. bungeana under different health statuses were compared and analyzed in the Xiong'an New Area. Using high-throughput deep sequencing [16S and internal transcribed spacer (ITS) rRNA] techniques, the effect of the health status of P. bungeana on the microbial communities in bulk soil, rhizospheric soil, roots, stems, and leaves was determined in this study. We observed that the diversity of the bacterial and fungal communities of the aboveground parts (stems and leaves) of healthy P. bungeana plants was much higher than that of the unhealthy plants. However, the diversity of bacterial and fungal communities in the belowground parts (bulk soil, rhizospheric soil, and roots) showed almost no difference in microbial community richness, indicating that the possible cause of illness was transmitted in a “top-down” manner. Furthermore, there were significant differences in the microbial diversity and community structure in different ecological niches of P. bungeana (P < 0.01). Proteobacteria and Actinobacteria were the dominant bacterial phyla, while Ascomycota, Basidiomycota, and Mortierellomycota were the predominant fungal phyla. Redundancy analysis (RDA) revealed that soil organic matter (SOM), total phosphorous (TP), total potassium (TK), total nitrogen (TN), water content (WC), power of hydrogen (pH), total carbon (TC), and the ratio of carbon to nitrogen (C/N) were significantly correlated with the composition of the microbial communities. Altogether, these results provide a scientific basis for further studies on the mechanism underlying the “aboveground–underground” microbial interactions in plantation forests, which can aid in promoting the healthy and sustainable development of the Millennium Xiulin forest in the Xiong'an New Area.

China is implementing an extensive urban forestry plan in Xiongan New Area (XNA), a new city in Hebei province. The city has been designated to serve Beijing’s noncapital functions and promote the integration of the broader Beijing–Tianjin–Hebei city-region. As part of a green initiative to minimize environmental impacts and its carbon footprint, a massive urban forestry system has been planned on an unprecedented scale, expected to cover over 600 km2 by 2030. Using science to inform policy, one major goal is to simultaneously minimize impacts of invasive species, while making urban forests more resilient to potential invasive species threats. In this review, we introduce these urban forestry plans such as basic concepts and principles for afforestation, tree species to be planted, delineation of existing pests already established, and expected forest invasive species of concern threatening the new area. Finally, we introduce a framework for invasive pest management strategies in XNA based on a “big data” approach and decision system to minimize impacts of invasive species. This new approach to urban forestry has the potential to become an exemplary global model for urban forestry planning, one that integrates research activities focused on forest health surveys and monitoring with sustainable forestry management. Finally, we provide an overview of the forest health policy required for the design of an unprecedentedly large new urban forest from initial planning to full implementation of an integrated forest management program.
