Techno-Economic Analysis of CO2 Capture Technologies in Offshore Natural Gas Field: Implications to Carbon Capture and Storage in Malaysia

Growing concern on global warming directly related to CO2 emissions is steering the implementation of carbon capture and storage (CCS). With Malaysia having an estimated 37 Tscfd (Trillion standard cubic feet) of natural gas remains undeveloped in CO2 containing natural gas fields, there is a need to assess the viability of CCS implementation. This study performs a techno-economic analysis for CCS at an offshore natural gas field in Malaysia. The framework includes a gas field model, revenue model, and cost model. A techno-economic spreadsheet consisting of Net Present Value (NPV), Payback Period (PBP), and Internal Rate of Return (IRR) is developed over the gas field’s production life of 15 years for four distinctive CO2 capture technologies, which are membrane, chemical absorption, physical absorption, and cryogenics. Results predict that physical absorption solvent (Selexol) as CO2 capture technology is most feasible with IRR of 15% and PBP of 7.94 years. The output from the techno-economic model and associated risks of the CCS project are quantified by employing sensitivity analysis (SA), which indicated that the project NPV is exceptionally sensitive to gas price. On this basis, the economic performance of the project is reliant on revenues from gas sales, which is dictated by gas market price uncertainties.

The membrane distillation process is one of the most important membrane technologies being developed for water desalination, which has the ability to compete with expensive processes such as reverse osmosis. In this study, the performance of polycarbonate (PC) hollow fiber membranes modified with silica aerogel nanoparticles (SIA-NPs) and polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) coating solution for direct contact membrane distillation was investigated. The membranes were fabricated by dry jet-wet spinning method. In this respect, 0.25, 0.5, and 1 wt% of SIA nanoparticles were coated over the hollow fiber surface in order to improve the performance of the membranes. The results indicated that the optimum loading of SIA was 0.5 wt% at which the contact angle of the surface shifted from 77.5 to 100 relative to the unmodified PC membrane.Although the addition of SIA nanoparticles to the membrane matrix did not alter the membrane conductivity, it increased the membrane thickness, thereby reduced the heat loss of the membrane. Accordingly, the results of performance tests for the membrane distillation (MD) showed that by adding 0.5% SIA nanoparticles to the membrane bulk and coating the surface with 0.5% SIA nanoparticles in 1.0% PDMS solution and 96% increase in energy efficiency, 33% increase in water flux, as well as higher stability of salt rejection were obtained. This study proved that the application of SIA nanoparticles have a great potential to modify and improve MD performance.

The capture of CO2 from flue gas and natural gas is essential for the sake of humanity. Aqueous potassium lysinate (LysK) is a suitable solvent utilized in the CO2 capturing process. Regeneration of the rich Lysk solution is crucial for process continuation and cost-effectiveness. In the present work, a two-dimensional mathematical model that considers both axial and radial diffusion are established to describe the CO2 elimination from rich potassium lysinate solution. The model describes the LysK regeneration process in a hollow fiber membrane contactor module. The modeling results showed that the carbon dioxide removal ratio is directly proportional to the amount of carbon dioxide present in the solution and the temperature of the solution. The increase in stripping temperature increases the percent CO2 released from rich solvent.
