The Effect of Immunization with Killed Tumor Cells, with/Without Feeding ofEchinacea purpureain an Erythroleukemic Mouse Model

Abstract: The results demonstrate that combination therapy, involving specific tumor cell immunization, followed by daily phytotherapy (dietary E. purpurea), sensitized the immune cells and led to life span prolongation greater than that provided by immunization alone.

“…Finally, during pregnancy, CD8+ T lineage lymphocytes express receptors for progesterone, and upon such activation, these cells secrete progesterone-induced blocking factor, which in turn, inhibits NK-cell-mediated cytolytic attack on the fetus [46][47][48] . The fact that lower numbers of normal fetuses were found throughout the middle stages of gestation (days 10-11; days [12][13][14] in the Echinacea -consuming pregnant mice suggests that the detrimental effect of Echinacea occurs early in pregnancy, again paralleling human pregnancies where the most sensitive phase for detrimental drug effects on the fetus occurs in the fi rst trimester.…”

“…We have recently shown, in vivo, that Echinacea, given to either normal, healthy adult mice, or to adult leukemic mice, signifi cantly increases the numbers of NK cells [10][11][12] . Primitive cells, such as stem cells and fetusassociated cells, are excellent targets for NK cells [13][14][15][16] .…”

“…18 The E purpurea root extracts ingested by mice increased NK cell function in aged mice to levels found in young adult mice 19 and increased numbers of splenic NK cells in a mouse erythroleukemia model, resulting in a significantly increased life span. 20,21 In contrast to these studies, E purpurea juice given orally to healthy humans in a double-blind, placebocontrolled, crossover study 22 had no effect on phagocytic activity of polymorphonuclear lymphocytes (PMNLs) or macrophages and no effect on macrophage production of TNF-␣ or IL-1␤. A review 23 of 5 randomized studies that examined immunomodulatory effects of Echinacea on humans, as measured by phagocytic activity of PMNLs, reported that 2 studies showed significantly increased phagocytic activity, whereas the remaining studies showed no effect.…”
