The Effect of Incorporation of Embankment Information for Flood Simulation of the Gin River, Sri Lanka

Abstract: As flooding is inevitable and becoming increasingly frequent, efficient flood management strategies should be developed to manage floods, especially in developing countries. Rainfall-Runoff-Inundation (RRI) model, which is based on a diffusive wave model, was applied to Gin River Basin, Sri Lanka using daily rainfall data. The RRI model was calibrated and validated for three past flood events (2003, 2016, and 2017) based on observed discharge data and inundation maps developed from ground survey data and satel… Show more

“…NSE varies from −∞ to 1, where a value of 1 indicates that the simulated hydrographs agree perfectly with the observed hydrographs. The optimized parameters of river and slope obtained from previous RRI model applications (Sayama et al, 2012;Jayapadma et al, 2022) are summarized in Tables 1 and 2. A comparison of simulated and observed hydrographs based on daily APHRODITE rainfall, daily evaporation from GLDAS and the 1992 land-use map at the two gauging stations is shown in Figure 2 for the historical period of 1980-2000.…”

“…Hydrological Model This study applied the Nedbør-Afstrømings-Model (NAM), a lumped conceptual module built in MIKE 11, to simulate rainfall-runoff in a continuous mode. The model has been successfully applied by previous researchers for hydrological investigations in many catchments including the catchments in Sri Lanka: rainfall-runoff simulations [15], [16], [17], model performance evaluation studies [18], land use change impact assessments on flood formations [19], and runoff simulations in un-gauged catchments [5], [6].…”

“…The rainfall-runoff inundation model (RRI), capable of simulating rainfall-runoff and inundation simultaneously, was employed in this study to simulate the river flow and inundation. The governing equations of the model are derived based on the mass balance and momentum equations elaborated in Sayama et al, 2012. First, the model's ability to simulate major flood events that occurred in the basin was tested based on an eventbased calibration (Jayapadma et al, 2022). Then it was verified further using APHRODITE rainfall data for the historical period 1980-2000.…”
