The Effect of Intragastric Pressure on Gastric Blood Flow after Partial Devascularization of the Stomach in Cats

Abstract: The influence of intragastric pressure (IGP) on gastric blood flow was studied in cats with regional ischemia due to partial gastric devascularization, and in sham-operated cats. IGP was controlled by intragastric installation of saline. Blood flow was determined by means of the microsphere distribution technique. Increment of IGP reduced mucosal and muscularis blood flow in all areas of the stomach, both in sham-operated and devascularized cats. In areas with reduced mucosal blood flow due to devascularizatio… Show more

“…Regional ischemia due to devascularization is exaggerated by elevated intraluminal gastric pressure due to gastric stasis produced by denervation. 17 These conditions resemble those arising in our two patients who underwent lesser curvature dissection with preservation of the gastric wall.…”

“… 11 This mechanism has been shown to decrease gastric blood flow in animal models. 12 Smoking increases acid and pepsin secretion and levels of oxygen-free radicals as well as decreasing prostaglandin synthesis, gastric blood flow and mucus secretion. 13 Portal hypertension decreases gastric blood flow due to vascular congestion.…”

“…On the other hand, intestinal factors include increased intragastric pressure[ 3 ]. Decreased gastric motility due to aging or diabetes can cause gastric distention and increased intragastric pressure, which can lead to disease development[ 13 , 14 ].…”
