The effect of isosaponarin isolated from wasabi leaf on collagen synthesis in human fibroblasts and its underlying mechanism

Abstract: Wasabi has been used as an important spice in Japanese foods. The wasabi leaves were used as a cosmetic material, but its biological activities have not yet been examined. We investigated the effect of isosaponarin derived from wasabi leaf on collagen synthesis in human fibroblasts. The production of type I collagen in human fibroblasts was increased with treatment of wasabi leaf extract. Isosaponarin isolated from wasabi leaves belonged to the group of flavone glycoside, and was the key compound in collagen s… Show more

“…Extracts from the leaves and roots of E. japonicum have numerous activities, such as antigenotoxic [13], anti-inflammatory [10,12], antioxidant [10,11], antiatopic dermatitis [14], antiplatelet [15], anticancer [15,16], and anti-obesity properties [17]. Besides value as a functional and regular food [18,19], the extract of the leaves of wasabi is also used as a cosmetic product, and it is included in the International Nomenclature of Cosmetic Ingredients (INCI) list [20,21].…”

“…There are some reports regarding the physiological functions of these leaves, including anti-fungal (Pedras et al, 1999), anti-oxidative (Hosoya et al, 2008;Lee et al, 2010;Sekiguchi et al, 2010), anti-cancer (Okamoto et al, 2008), anti-inflammatory , anti-influenza virus (Mochida and Ogawa, 2008), and collagen synthesis (Nagai et al, 2010) activities. In a study identifying compounds besides isothiocyanates in wasabi leaves, polyphenols such as flavonoids (Hosoya et al, 2005), phenylpropanoids (Hosoya et al, 2008), terpenoids , and carotenoids were isolated.…”
