The effect of low air-to-liquid mass flow rate ratios on the size, size distribution and shape of calcium alginate particles produced using the atomization method

Abstract: This study investigated the effects of atomization at low air-to-liquid mass flow rate ratios View the MathML source mair/mliq on the size, size distribution and shape of the calcium alginate (Ca-alginate) particles produced. It was found that the View the MathML source mair/mliq ratio must be greater than 0.0011 to atomize a 20 g/L sodium alginate solution. Ca-alginate particles with a broad mean sizes ranging from 50 to 2300 μm were produced using a View the MathML source mair/mliq ratio lower than 3.5. The … Show more

“…Pressurized air or gas can be used to flow the alginate solution from a confined tank (reservoir) through a tube to the extrusion nozzle 4, 10, 20, 26–29 instead of a feed pump such as a peristaltic pump. The delivery of alginate solution using pressurized air can minimize any pulsation problems caused by a peristaltic pump which can result in the incorporation of air bubbles in a viscous alginate solution 30.…”

“…They improve the flow conditions in the bed 8 and allow flow across the beads with less pressure drop 9. Microgels in the size range of 500–2000 μm give a distinct mouth feel and provide a clear visualization of the encapsulated product 10. This could be a marketing strategy for product differentiation in a competitive market 11.…”

“…In addition, most conventional approaches use external gelation methods and have a less control of the size, the size distribution, and the morphology of obtained particles [92,93]. In fact, deformed alginate particles with tails are often obtained using the dripping technique [94].…”

“…[33][34][35] There are three common methods for synthesizing alginate carriers: coacervation, 36 layer by layer, 37 and atomization. 38 Liang et al loaded paclitaxel, which was a strong hydrophobic drug, into poly (γ-glutamic acid)-poly(lactide) nanoparticles functionalized with galactosamine (P/Gal-NPs) as a new targeted drug delivery system to treat HepG2. 39 The results showed that receptor-mediated endocytosis increased the efficiency of paclitaxel compared with clinically available paclitaxel formulation.…”
