The effect of medical nutrition therapy on changes in dietary knowledge and DASH diet adherence in older adults with cardiovascular disease

Abstract: The MNT administered was effective at improving dietary knowledge, but not at improving DASH adherence. Three MNT sessions may be insufficient to change behavior. Integrating behavioral change theory and cultural sensitivity to MNT may improve diet adherence among diverse older adults.

“…Knowledge regarding consequences of lifestyle changes and mechanisms of antihypertensive medication was not associated with control of hypertension. Similarly, an intensive nutritional intervention therapy (intense one-on-one educational sessions) for hypertensive patients increased knowledge but was not associated with improved dietary behaviour [17]. In summary, patient 8 ISRN Hypertension education can lead to increased knowledge about hypertension; however, this is not necessarily reflected in adaptations in behaviour [18] or, as this study shows, is not associated with better BP control.…”

“…The study by Troyer et al [16] was the main study focusing on the dietary changes between those received and not received therapeutic meals, while the study by E. Racine et al [17] was the sub-analysis of the effectiveness of MNT versus education information on DASH diet knowledge. In the first study [16], the analysis involved 210 participants, in which 50% received 7 therapeutic meals per week for 52 weeks.…”
