The effect of methionine and folic acid administered in ovo on the hematological parameters of chickens (Gallus gallus domesticus)

Abstract: Methionine ( Met ), an essential amino acid in poultry diets, when overdosed may cause hyperhomocysteinemia, which is mainly a trigger for cardiovascular diseases in humans. Homocysteine is neutralized (remethylated) in the presence of folic acid ( FA ), which also plays an important role in hematopoiesis and participates in the synthesis of DNA, and its deficiencies may result in the development of neural tube defects. One of the basic tools in studying the impact… Show more

“…Next, the eggshell surface above the air cell was disinfected with 70% ethanol, and a hole was made using an 18G needle (1.20 mm × 40 mm). The experimental solution (100 µL) was in ovo injected into the albumen using a G20 needle (0.9 mm × 40 mm) with an insulin syringe (1 mL) ( Lis et al, 2009 ; Dżugan et al, 2011 ; Lis et al, 2011 ; Dżugan et al, 2012 ; Tombarkiewicz et al, 2020 ).…”

“…The assessment of RBC numbers is an essential element in hematological diagnostics which detects the malfunctioning of the circulatory system [ 35 ]. The study revealed that high levels of methionine might cause changes in complete blood count [ 36 , 37 ]. In this study, the RBC parameters were within the reference range regardless of the Met source and dietary Met levels.…”

“…Furthermore, similar findings were reported by Simaraks et al [ 39 ] and Ding et al [ 40 ], who discovered that RBC counts in Thai indigenous chickens and Chinese Haidong chickens ranged from 2.0 to 3.0 × 10 6 /L, respectively. Furthermore, Tombarkiewicz et al [ 36 ] found that the number of RBC in broilers varied with age, ranging from 1.70–2.37 × 10 6 /L to 1.80–1.96 × 10 6 /L to 2.72–2.91 × 10 6 /L on the 1st, 7th, and 35th day of life, respectively. Higher Hb levels confirm the observed effect of Met source and levels on RBC numbers.…”

“…Methionine is an important source of sulfur in the organism. It is involved in synthesis of sulfuric acid that is essential for disabling some metabolic products in the liver of animals (Albrecht et al, 2017;Tombarkiewicz et al, 2020).…”
