Objectives: This study aimed to evaluate the effect of group prenatal care on empowerment of pregnant adolescents. Methods: In this randomized controlled trial, 294 pregnant adolescents (aged 15-19) were randomly assigned into two groups of group prenatal care (GPNC, n=147) and individual prenatal care (IPNC, n=147). GPNC group received 5 sessions of GPNC (90-120 min) during 16-20 weeks of pregnancy, while the control group received individual prenatal care. The empowerment of participants in the two groups was measured using the empowerment scale for pregnant women. Data were analyzed using the Chi-square test, independent t-test, and adjusted regression test. Results: The mean total score of pregnant women’s empowerment in the GPNC and IPNC groups after the intervention was 86.46±4.95 and 81.89±4.75, respectively [ β= 6.11, 95% CI: 4.89, 7.33, p<0.0001]. The improvement of dimensions of pregnancy empowerment in GPNC versus IPNC was as follows: Self‐efficacy: 18.21 ± 2.12 vs. 16.19 ± 1.79 [β= 2.52, 95% CI: 2.19, 2.86, p<0.0001], Future image: 19.57±1.57 vs. 18.95±1.54 [β= 0.67, 95% CI: (0.44, 0.9], Self-esteem: 21.79 ± 1.75 vs. 20.90 ± 1.85 [β= 0.69, 95% CI: 0.41, 0.97, P<0.0001], Joy of an addition to the family: 13.13±1.69 vs. 12.84±1.40 [β= 0.51, 95% CI: 0.28, 0.74, P=0.009], and Support and assurance from others: 13.70 ± 1.1 and 13.04 ± 1.07, [β= 0.76, 95% CI: 0.13, 1.65, P<0.0001]. Conclusion: Group prenatal care can improve adolescent pregnant women’s empowerment. Results of the present study can serve as a useful foundation for implementing the group prenatal care model in Iran. Pre-eclampsia is one of the main causes of maternal mortality, premature birth and low birth weight in developing countries. In addition, this condition can lead to chronic diseases (including cardiovascular and renal diseases) in postpartum mothers. The purpose of this study was to review the effectiveness of psycho-educational counseling in pregnant women with preeclampsia. The methods of this study were using PRISMA guidelines, databases from Scopus, PubMed and ScienceDirect, were published 2016 until 2020, yielded 65 articles. The keywords were retrieved from Medical Subject Heading (Mesh). The results showed interventions were given during the treatment period ranges from cognitive-behavioral counseling group that received four 1.5-h counseling sessions and the solution-focused counseling that received three 1.5-h counseling sessions, which were held weekly. This systematic review concludes that improving prenatal empowerment and self-care enable mothers to experience fewer complications in this period of their life. Thus, psycho-educational provides an excellent opportunity for educating and counseling pregnant women to promote maternal and neonatal health and psychological well-being.

AimTo examine the effect of the provision of care on health outcomes when provided based on Orem's Self‐Care Deficit Theory during perinatal period.BackgroundThe perinatal period is a process with multidimensional care needs for the mother, baby and family. Care based on nursing theories can improve the quality of perinatal care.DesignA systematic review and meta‐analysis.Review methodsStudies on this topic from 2006 to 2020 have been accessed by nine database searches. The methodological quality of the studies was assessed using the Critical Appraisal Checklists for experimental and quasi‐experimental studies, developed by the Joanna Briggs Institute. This study was conducted by following the Preferred Reporting System for Systematic Reviews and Meta‐Analyses.ResultsThis systematic review included nine studies with a total sample size of 839 women. These studies showed that care based on Orem's theory significantly helped prolong the mean duration of pregnancy, reduced the incidence of preterm labor, improved hygiene behaviour and increased empowerment. Concerning the perinatal period, this intervention significantly improved self‐care and readiness for hospital discharge, adaptation and breastfeeding self‐efficacy and reduced nipple pain and pain due to abdominal distension.ConclusionsThe implementation of this theory into care during the perinatal period can contribute to improved health outcomes.Summary statementWhat is already known about this topic? The quality of pregnancy and postpartum care is important for the maternal health. The use of nursing theories—which nursing knowledge is produced—improves care quality and ensures that care is organized systematically. What this paper adds? There is insufficient research that supports Orem's theory of self‐care deficit in pregnancy and postpartum care and also no systematic review about this topic, but the current meta‐analysis showed that postnatal and prenatal treatments based on Orem's theory have a positive impact on the self‐care agency. The implications of this paper: The use of Orem's theory helps nurses understand women and their needs during pregnancy and postpartum periods. Integrating Orem's theory of self‐care deficit into pregnancy and postpartum nursing care services can help increase women's self‐care power.
