The Effect of Morphology on the Tribological Properties of MoS2 in Liquid Paraffin

Abstract: The tribological properties of liquid paraffin (LP) containing molybdenum disulfide (MoS 2 ) additives, including nano-balls, nano-slices, and bulk 2H-MoS 2 , are evaluated using a four-ball tribometer. Results show that all MoS 2 additives used can improve the tribological properties of LP, and that nanosized MoS 2 particles function as lubrication additives in LP better than micro-MoS 2 particles do. The LP with nano-balls presents the best antifriction and antiwear properties at the MoS 2 content of 1.5 wt%… Show more

“…1c (2h = 14.1°), the average layer distance of nano-MoS 2 prepared at 450°C is 0.632 nm. Pure nano-MoS 2 prepared at 780°C is reported to have layer distances of *0.625 nm [12]. The layered distance of nano-MoS 2 decreases with increasing calcination temperature, and becomes consistent with that of 2H-MoS 2 (0.615 nm) at 960°C [9].…”

“…The peaks at~724.6 eV and~710.9 eV (Fig. 8a) were ascribed to the Fe2p1/2 and Fe2p3/2 of -Fe(III)-O-, respectively, the tribological oxidation production of steel [28]. This was also confirmed by the O1s peak at 529.7 eV (Fig.…”
