“…Long‐chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (LCPUFA), in particular docosahexaenoic acid (DHA; 22:6n3) and arachidonic acid (ARA; 20:4n6), are found in high concentrations in the brain and have been shown to be important for cognitive and visual development (Lauritzen, Hansen, Jørgensen & Michaelsen, ). DHA has been reported to affect cognitive functions such as working memory (Zhang, Hebert & Muldoon, ), problem solving ability (Willatts, Forsyth, DiModugno, Varma & Colvin, ), information processing speed (Henriksen, Haugholt, Lindgren, Aurvåg, Rønnestad et al ., ; Willatts, Forsyth, Agostoni, Casaer, Riva et al ., ) and motor skills (Seferoğlu, Erman, Şahan & Toktaş, ). The role of LCPUFAs in cognitive development may be linked to the biological effects of LCPFUAs on brain development, which are known to impact neuronal membrane structure, synaptogenesis, and myelination (Georgieff, ).…”
