The Effect of Nasal Septal Perforation and its Treatment on Objective Sleep and Breathing Parameters

Abstract: BackgroundNasal septal perforation (NSP) may alter nasal airflow patterns and physiology. To the best of our knowledge, no studies in the English literature have investigated the effect of NSP and its treatment on polysomnographic parameters. In this study, we aimed to investigate polysomnographic parameters in patients with NSP as well as changes in those parameters after treatment of NSP.Material/MethodsNineteen patients diagnosed with NSP were included in the study. All patients had baseline and post-proced… Show more

“…The patient's chief concern in this current report was related to the use of her CPAP machine at night and not achieving a proper seal due to her nasal septum perforation. Boynuegri et al studied the effects of nasal septum perforations on objective sleep and breathing parameters. The study followed 19 patients with nasal septum perforations before and after being repaired by silicone buttons and found no deterioration in objective sleep parameters .…”

“…Boynuegri et al studied the effects of nasal septum perforations on objective sleep and breathing parameters. The study followed 19 patients with nasal septum perforations before and after being repaired by silicone buttons and found no deterioration in objective sleep parameters . Although there is no evidence to suggest nasal perforations have a negative impact on sleep parameters, in this patient it did address her chief concern, and minimized the symptoms of dryness, bleeding, and crusting.…”

“…Nasal septal perforations are a relatively uncommon pathology that can occur due to trauma, iatrogenic causes, and inhalation drug use among others. 1,2 Perforations can cause symptoms of chronic epistaxis, nasal crusting, congestion, and whistling when breathing. 2 These symptoms can significantly impact patient quality of life.…”
