The Effect of Nitrogen Fertilization on the Yield, Quality and Fatty Acid Composition of Opuntia ficus-indica Seed Oil

Abstract: Cactus pears are nutritious, drought-tolerant plants that flourish in hot and arid regions. All its plant parts can be consumed by humans and animals. Fruit seed oil production is an important emerging industry in South Africa. As part of an initiative to promote cactus pears as multi-functional crops, dual-purpose cultivars should be identified, and their production increased. The aim of this study was to investigate the role of nitrogen (N) fertilizer on the seed oil yield and quality of Opuntia ficus-indica… Show more

“…A palma forrageira pode alcançar alta produtividade se manejada corretamente. A adubação orgânica e mineral é uma importante medida de manejo da cultura da palma, devendo ser realizada a cada corte, considerando a elevada extração de nutrientes com a remoção das raquetes (Arba et al, 2017;Nkoi et al, 2021). A combinação de fontes de fertilizantes mineral com adubo orgânico pode melhorar a eficiência da absorção de nutrientes pelas plantas.…”

“…Greenhouse horticulture relies on a substantial use of fertilizers, especially nitrogen per unit area, in comparison with other cropping systems 1,2 . Nitrogen plays a key role in various essential processes, including growth, leaf‐area expansion, biomass production, crop yield, produce quality, and response to environmental stresses 3,4 . Nitrogen fertilizers have been often overused because of the high crop N requirements under greenhouse conditions, with little attention paid to the negative impact on the environment and human health; 5 nonetheless it has been verified that there is no linear correlation between high N fertilizer supply and uptake, transport, and storage of this element 1 .…”

“…It is therefore important to understand the impact of different fertilization and tillage systems on crop yield stability and predict future yield. In conventional fertilization methods, farmers prefer to increase the application of nitrogen fertilizer because nitrogen fertilization improves soil fertility and increases crop productivity 2 . For example, continuous application of nitrogen (120 kg/ha) and phosphorus (52 kg/ha) fertilizers can increase maize yield by up to 200% over 32 years 3 .…”
