Abstract:Background: International guidelines for pain, sedation, delirium, immobility, and sleep in critically ill patients recommend the use of noise and light reduction strategies to improve sleep. The aims of this study were: 1) to evaluate critical care nurses’ (CCNs) perceptions regarding sources of noise and light in the intensive care unit (ICU), and 2) to identify factors associated with critical care patients’ need for sedation when their sleep is disturbed by noise or light.
