The effect of non-pathogenic Escherichia coli in symptomatic uncomplicated diverticular disease of the colon

Abstract: Non-pathogenic strain Nissle significantly prolonged the remission period and improved the abdominal syndrome in symptomatic uncomplicated diverticular disease. A randomized, placebo-controlled study is recommended.

“…S1 in the supplemental material). In vivo approaches using the controlled biofilm capacities of innocuous bacteria could thus be envisaged (i) to challenge deleterious biofilms found in both industrial and medical settings through bacterial interference or competitive adhesion to the surface (77) or through the production of toxic or matrix-dissolving compounds such as cellulase and dispersins, (ii) to optimize the persistence of probiotic strains (15,19,24,27,28,31,33,37,64), and (iii) to improve-via stronger heterologous bacterial interactions-the establishment, in nonsterile soil microcosms or in mixed bioreactors, of strains with desirable or genetically engineered features and their development as biosensors or agents in bioremediation processes (8,22,26,53,65,72).…”

“…This probiotic drug, Mutaflor ® , is successfully used in several countries for the treatment of various diseases of the digestive tract, including acute and prolonged diarrhea (Henker et al, 2007;, uncomplicated diverticular disease (Fric and Zavoral, 2003), and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) (Kruis et al 1997, Matthes et al, 2010, Rembacken et al, 1999. It is particularly used for maintenance therapy of remission in patients with ulcerative colitis (UC) (Schultz, 2008).…”

“…Its symptomatology includes pain in the hypogastrium, irregular bowel movements, abdominal bloating, and excessive flatulence. E. coli Nissle 1917 significantly prolongs remission after relapse treated with an intestinal antimicrobial and absorbent [151]. The effect is probably due to the stabilization of intestinal MF, normalization of intestinal dysfunction, and downregulation of hypersensitivity reactions.…”
