“…This hypothesis is confirmed by the above results, showing a reduction in O 2 •− , H 2 O 2 and nitrotyrosine levels in ACE oil-fed hypertensive mice. Our results are in agreement with previous studies reporting that the secoiridoid oleuropein, a major component of olive polyphenols, increased the levels of SOD and GSH-Px in gentamicin-induced renal toxicity and in cisplatin-induced renal injury models [ 62 , 81 , 82 ], as well as in the kidneys of rats with unilateral ureteral obstruction [ 83 ]. However, due to the complexity of the biochemical pathways involved and the relevance of antioxidant enzymes in the retina, their implication in the eye is currently unpredictable [ 84 ], and different antioxidant profiles are found depending on the specific retinopathy, as reported in AMD [ 85 ] and DR [ 86 ], among others.…”

“…In particular, it was shown that dietary OL and OLE treatments were associated with reductions in the production of superoxide anion radical in human monocytes from healthy donors [35]. Similarly, OL administration significantly increased the SOD and glutathione peroxidase (GPx) activity levels in the obstructed kidneys from rats with unilateral ureteral obstruction induced-kidney injury [36]. These results are in accordance with other reports showing that OL was able to increase the amount of enzymes such as GPx and SOD in gentamicin-induced renal toxicity and cisplatin-induced renal injury models [37,38].…”

“…The major compound of olive leaves is oleuropein, which modulates in ammatory parameters and reduces oxidative stress [19]. It has been shown to have antioxidant [20], anti-in ammatory [21], antihypertensive [22], cardioprotective [23], antidiabetic [24], anticancer [25], and hypolipidemic[26] effects.…”
