The Effect of Oxidized White Liquor on Pulp Brightness in Peroxide Bleaching in Pulp Mills

Abstract: This paper aims to study the effect of using Oxidized White Liquor (OWL) on pulp brightness in peroxide bleaching. The proper setting of the concentration of hydrogen peroxide, the bleaching temperature, and the bleaching time was also studied. The Central Composite Design (CCD) was proposed to generate necessary experimental runs. Regression analysis was used to determine the relationship equation. Optimization helped determine that to obtain the targeted brightness of 83%, the ratio between the volume of OWL… Show more

“…362 This DHFC can operate continuously for about 2,000 hr with continuous fuel supply, and supplies about 0.58 V at 1 A, which makes it suitable for mass production. 362 Hydrogen Peroxide Photocatalytic Reduction of O 2 to H 2 O 2 by H 2 O Hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) is a useful environmentally friendly oxidant for organic synthesis, [363][364][365][366][367][368][369][370] bleaching of paper pulp, 371,372 and degradation of dyes and other organic contaminants in waste water, [373][374][375][376] because it emits only water as a byproduct. “…Hydrogen peroxide (H 2 O 2 ) is a versatile compound with a broad use in many industrial areas. For example, it is utilized in medicine, wastewater treatment, as a ripening agent, in detergents, and even as a liquid propellant. , The main use of H 2 O 2 is certainly pulp and paper bleaching , and as a reactant in chemical syntheses. Especially, as an oxidant, H 2 O 2 is an interesting compound since it has a high atom efficiency (47.1 wt % are active oxygen); it has a high oxidation potential over the whole pH range ( E O = 1.763 V at pH 0, E O = 0.878 V at pH 14); and since water is the only byproduct, it is environmentally friendly …”

“…These differences might influence the consumption of chemicals in further pulp production stages and final product quality. An experimental investigation and subsequent oxidation parameter tuning are necessary in real pulp and paper mills [16] in order to implement the technology successfully and avoid any significant disruptions in the production process.…”
