“…The output of PGF 2α , but not of 6‐keto‐PGF 1α or PGE 2 , was similarly increased by UTP. PGF 2α contracts the guinea‐pig uterus and potentiates the contractile effect of ATP on guinea‐pig myometrium ( Dozi‐Vassilides et al ., 1976 ; Whalley & White, 1980a , 1980b ; Weichman & Tucker, 1982 ; Coleman & Parkington, 1988 ). PGl 2 contracts the rat uterus and potentiates the action of other spasmogens on this tissue ( Vane & Williams, 1973 ; Williams et al ., 1979 ; Phillips & Poyser, 1981 ).…”

“…On the basis of these fmdings concluded that in uterine smooth muscle ATP may act at an excitatory purinoreceptor and at a second receptor which elicits stimulation of prostaglandin synthesis. Preliminary observations reported by Dozi-Vassiliades et al (1976) also showed that indomethacin blocked the contractile response of the guinea-pig myometrium to ATP, and in addition, that subthreshold doses of PGE2 and PGF 2 0! potentiated myometrial contractions to ATP.…”

“…Using guinea pig longitudinal muscle preparations, showed that ATP-induced contractions of the oesophagus, duodenum, jejenum and ileum are selectively inhibited by indomethacin and the prostaglandin antagonist polyphoretin phosphate, while contractions to acetylcholine and histamine are minimally reduced by the antagonists. Several further examples of such a link between ATP and prostaglandins have now reported, e.g., in the guinea-pig trachea , uterus (Dozi-Vassiliades et al, 1976;Moritoki et aZ., 1979), monkey and rabbit bladder , rabbit rectococcygeus (Cocks et aZ., 1979), rat gastric corpus (Hunt et al, 1978), rat anococcygeus (Burnstock et aZ., 1978), and rabbit detrusor muscle (Dean and Downie, 1978). These studies indicate that prostaglandins are often involved in the actions of exogenous ATP on smooth muscle.…”

“…In freshly isolated myometrial cells from pregnant rats treatment with ATP induces contractions and P2X 7 receptor-mediated currents, and the effect can be blocked with Mg 2+ (Urabe et al, 2009;Miyoshi et al, 2010Miyoshi et al, , 2012. Depending on the species and hormonal phase/pregnancy, myometrial contractions can be induced with ATP, UTP or ADP (Urabe et al, 2009;Bülbring et al, 1968;Dozi-Vassiliades et al, 1976;Ninomiya and Suzuki, 1983;Osa and Maruta, 1987;Ziganshin et al, 2006), and they involve the action of prostaglandins (Moritoki et al, 1979;Suzuki, 1991;Aitken et al, 2001). Whole cell voltage clamp studies in primary cultures of pregnant rat myometrial cells showed that ATP activated a monovalent cation-selective and estrogen-sensitive conductance (Honoré et al, 1989).…”
