The effect of physical therapy and rehabilitation modalities on sleep quality in patients with primary knee osteoarthritis: A single-blind, prospective, randomized-controlled study

Abstract: Objectives: In this study, we aimed to evaluate the effect of physical therapy modalities on pain, sleep, mental status, and quality of life of patients with osteoarthritis (OA). Patients and methods: Between January 2017 and June 2017, a total of 40 patients (9 males, 31 females; mean age 56.6±8.9 years; range, 40 to 70 years) who were diagnosed with knee OA according to the American College of Rheumatology (ACR) criteria and were in Kellgren-Lawrence Grade 2-3 were included in the study. The patients were di… Show more

“…One study in people with OA (who were not specifically included based on the presence of insomnia symptoms) was identified assessing the effectiveness of 15 sessions of exercise therapy plus 10 sessions of physical therapy modalities (i.e., hot pack, therapeutic ultrasound, and transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation) in comparison to 15 sessions of exercise therapy alone. In both groups, there was a significant improvement in sleep quality assessed with the PSQI) and clinical OA-related pain after the treatment [59]. This improvement was significantly greater in the intervention group for both sleep quality and clinical OA-related pain.…”

“…in the physiotherapy treatment of osteoarthritis, hot and cold applications, therapeutic ultrasound, TENS, and acupuncture were the most commonly used methods [6]. Therapeutic ultrasound applications relieve pain and positively affect the physical function of patients with osteoarthritis [19,20].…”

“…The evidence level of the effect of strengthening exercises for the quadriceps femoris muscle is high [21]. it is highlighted that therapeutic exercises should be included in the main treatment program for osteoarthritis in addition to the various physiotherapy modalities [6]. As strengthening exercises are effective for knee osteoarthritis, we also recommended isometric and isotonic strengthening exercises for the quadriceps femoris muscle and dynamic step exercises as a homebased exercise program for both patient groups.…”

“…SF-36 scale as a tool can catch the similar result. The SF-36, the most used general health measure, is used to evaluate quality of life [6]. A cross-sectional research's objective was to assess health-related quality of life (HRQOL) in older persons (55 to 78 years old) with hip and/or knee OA in comparison to those without Osteoarthritis.…”
