The effect of polymer and CaCl2 concentrations on the sulfasalazine release from alginate-N,O-carboxymethyl chitosan beads

Abstract: In this study, pH-sensitive blended polymeric beads were prepared by ionic gelation of mixed alginate and N,O-carboxymethyl chitosan (NOCC) solutions in aqueous media containing calcium chloride. To prepare drug-loaded beads, sulfasalazine (SA) as a model drug was added to the initial aqueous polymer solution. These beads were characterized and evaluated in vitro as potential carriers for colon-specific drug delivery. A 32 full factorial experimental design was employed to evaluate the effect of polymer and Ca… Show more

“…PU–alginate polymeric beads were prepared by the crosslinking of alginate chains by calcium chloride by the addition of polymeric blends into the crosslinking solution of calcium chloride. Alginate was crosslinked immediately in a Ca 2+ solution, and thus, microencapsulated beads were formed . On the contrary, PU did not get crosslinked in the calcium chloride solution.…”

“…Accurately weighed amounts of beads were immersed in 10 mL of each media at 37 ±0.5°C for 6 h. The swollen beads were taken out of the medium and weighed immediately in a microbalance; this was followed by blotting with a paper towel to remove excess water on the surface at fixed time intervals. The degree of swelling was calculated with the following formula: Swelling degree (%)=(WW0)W0×100% where W is the weight of the beads after swelling and W 0 is the initial weight of the beads.…”

“…Carboxymethyl chitosan nanoparticles are prepared chiefly by ionic gelation process. Extensive research has been carried out to synthesize carboxymethyl chitosan nanoparticles loaded with drug by ionic gelation process . This can either be chemically crosslinked with glutaraldehyde (GA) and genipin or physically crosslinked with sodium tripolyphosphate, calcium chloride, and so on.…”
